With a Bachelor degree in Philosophy at Peking University (北京大学) and an MSc in Economics and Finance at the University of York, I started my career in a consulting company, providing legal and financial advice for the government and businesses in infrastructure projects, such as power plants, water plants, sewage treatment plants, highways, and undergrounds. I left the company to pursue my PhD in Economics at Cardiff University, focusing on macroeconomic DSGE modelling and applied microeconomics.
I started my academic career as a lecturer in Economics and Finance at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and then formally joined Cardiff Business School at Cardiff University in 2016. I am now a Professor of Economics and Director of China Centre for Business Research and Welsh Institute for Research in Economics and Development. Since May 2025, I have been serving as University Dean for International, reporting to the PVC International and the International Strategy Goup. My leadership roles mainly cover partnerships in Greater China and Transnational Education (TNE). As part of my senior management responsibilities, I also act as Director of Cardiff Confucius Institute.
My research in macroeconomics, innovation, and policy evaluation has been published in top field journals such as Research Policy, Reginal Studies, Economic History Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Annals of Tourism Research, Energy Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, etc.
Meanwhile, I keep a close connection with the industries, providing consultancy for Confused.com, Ausnutria Dairy Co., Ltd, and Peril Capital Ltd. I also contributed to the quantitative evaluation of the Welsh government’s Independent Living Adaptation scheme and investigating the health needs of the homeless (jointly with Shelter Cymru). I was invited to present my findings at the House of Parliament (London) and at the Welsh Assembly (Cardiff). I also actively contribute opinions and interviews to BBC, ITV, The Conversation, Yahoo, Asia Times, and Oxford Analytica, with a wide readership ranging from United Nations to multinational businesses.
