Welcome to Music Theory I! In this class you will learn about the various concepts around which music is built. You will progress from learning about pitch designation, to chord progressions, to four-part writing (and everything in between) by the end of the year. Score analysis will be an integral part of the course, and we will constantly make connections between concepts and actual music. On top of learning about theory, you will also develop listening skills through various ear training activities.
This year, I am starting to incorporate elements of a “flipped” classroom in order to maximize the mastery of theory skills through direct, individual guidance to all students in class. You will be asked to watch concept lesson videos posted on our class website, at home. We will then apply the concepts to score study and in-class assignments. Think of it as a backwards class. You have the lesson at home, and do the homework at school! This allows for me, the teacher, to work with you individually in class as you encounter some of the challenging aspects of music theory. Disclaimer: You may still have periodic homework assignments and projects to be completed at home! If you do not have internet access, please let me know as soon as possible. I can easily make a DVD for you, or provide access to a school computer.
We are in for an interesting, and enriching year! I am excited to get to know all of you and help you develop and refine your musicianship skills through music theory.
Sincerely,
Ms. H
Materials
For this class, you will need a binder to keep yourself organized. I recommend at least a 2” binder, since you will be receiving numerous scores and handouts throughout the year. Everyday you must bring a pencil (ANY WORK DONE IN PEN WILL NOT BE GRADED), paper, a flat surface to write on, and an open mind. I will provide staff paper.
Grading Policy
Tardy Policy
If you are late, the door will be locked and you must go to the 9th grade office to receive a tardy pass before you are let it. No exceptions. If you have a pass from another teacher, please still report to the 9th grade office, and present the pass to them. If you walk fast you CAN make it to class on time!
Makeup Test Policy
All OCPS teachers are required to allow students to take a make up test to improve their grade. In order to qualify for a make up test, you must have completed all assignments for that unit. You must schedule a make up test with me before or after school. Make up tests will not be given during class. I don't want you to miss anything!
