About Music Theory I
Welcome to Music Theory I for the 2015-2016 school year! Throughout the year, you will learn everything from pitch designation, to key signatures, to four-part writing! I emphasize the direct connection of theory concepts to musical scores and examples, so we will be looking extensively at multiple scores throughout the year. This approach will show you how to make connections between music theory and the pieces you will learn in your ensembles. On top of learning about music theory, we will work on developing your ear training skills such as sight singing (yes, even instrumental students can benefit from this!), interval recognition, and rhythmic/melodic dictation.

This school year, I am starting a new approach to teaching theory in my classroom. I have developed this website primarily to post lesson videos for you to watch at home. In class, you will apply the knowledge learned from the videos to complete assignments. This "flipped" classroom arrangement allows for maximum individual teacher assistance during class. You will still have homework assignments, and potentially projects throughout the year, but the bulk of your work will be done in class, where I can give you immediate feedback and guide you in the right direction. If you do not watch the lesson videos, you will get behind. Fortunately, they will remain on the website throughout the school year, and you can go back and reference each lesson, should you need to refresh your memory on a particular skill. To learn more about flipped classrooms, and how they have worked wonders at other schools, go HERE.
