STEP Standard 2 - Writing Standards-Based Objectives and the Learning Goal
Unit Topic: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Unit Title: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
National or State Academic Content Standards
Include both the standard code and the title. Be sure to only include standards you will provide instruction for and that will be assessed.
Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include: vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a perpendicular bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the segment’s endpoints.
Prove the slope criteria for the parallel and perpendicular lines and use them to solve geometric problems.
Learning Goal
Provide the overall learning goal for this unit. What do you want students to know and be able to do at the end of the unit?
As perpendicular and parallel lines are introduced, students should be able to investigate the connection between their slopes. Students should be able to write the equation of a line given a slope whether it be parallel or perpendicular.
Measurable Objectives
List the measurable objectives for this unit. Make sure the objectives are measurable and only include the objectives you plan to assess and you have evidence the students have met or not met the objectives.
1. Make conclusions and connections about slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines.
2. Determine whether lines are parallel or perpendicular given the slope of a line.
3. Write the equation of perpendicular or parallel lines.
4. Identify and describe parallel lines and transversals.
5. Identify parallel lines using angle pair relationships
