Peacock, the icon of sexual selection theory. The Shinto shrine that is just three minutes walk from my house somehow has peacocks.

Mating of adzuki bean beetles (Callosobruchus chinensis). When I first saw the mating of them as an undergraduate student for my study, I thought it was mating failure (I was expecting mounting, which does not occur in this species).

Adzuki bean beetles, Callosobruchus chinensis.

A male (left) and a female (right) of a seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus. Female of this species is injured when they are mated with a C. chinensis male, who indiscriminately attempts heterospecific mating. The injury causes the female to produce fewer offspring. See Kyogoku and Sota (2015) J Evol Biol for details.
