Recommendations for Secondary Education
Badges should NOT replace/be directly correlated to grades
Use badging selectively, such as only for difficult topics or review
Provide multiple ways to earn badges or different badge pathways
Recognize skills and knowledge that are not measured by traditional assessment methods
Use badges as motivation to display advanced understanding of a difficult content
Offer a badging program as part of extra-curricular opportunities in a club after school
At the secondary level, digital badging is currently envisioned in two ways
Teachers use badging within the classroom to enhance instruction strategically or 'gamify' a classroom
Students earn badges outside the classroom to earn credentials in addition to their traditional course work
Lucy Learner
Badges Lucy Earned
Trigonometry Master - As a part of the trigonometry unit in her Pre-Calculus class, Lucy earned a badge through ClassBadges to acknowledge mastery of the chapter's core concepts. In order to earn this badge, Lucy completed all of her homework, got a B or better on her tests, presented 3 or more problems in front of the class, and completed a successful group project about trigonometric applications. In the badging system, her teacher linked all of her work to the meta-data on the back of the badge. Lucy takes this badge with her to her Calculus class the next year, where her new
teacher uses this information to differentiate instruction for Lucy.
CSS Cross Country - Lucy's school does not offer a course on computer coding. To pursue her interest in computer coding, she has signed up for a course at Code School. Code School uses Mozilla Open Badges to provide credentials for their coursework. Lucy completes the given coursework and learns about the basics of CSS coding and how to use it efficiently. At each level of the course, she earns leveled badges that lead up to a larger CSS Cross Country badge that is put into her Mozilla Backpack. Lucy uses the badges in her backpack when applying for colleges and applying for jobs.
