Recommendations for the University Level:
To be meaningful, a badging system needs quality insurance, validity, and integrity
The issuer must clearly define how the badge will be earned
The criteria for earning the badge must accurately measure the skills it claims to represent
In most cases, badges should represent an actual skill rather than a superficial activity
Well-planned, distinct opportunities for badge-earning should be presented to the learner
Ideally, badges should be "stackable," --earning a series of badges can lead to a higher-level badge or certificate
Badges should be designed with a professional look, reflecting integrity and validity
Badges should have portability, with the chance to be openly displayed among systems
Badges should have mass, meaning being issued by a respected institution or a valued third party

Badges Lucy Earned
Lucy is enrolled at the University of Colorado and is taking general classes working towards a bachelor's degree. She is thinking about majoring in biology.
During her freshman year, Lucy takes Biology 101 and earns a badge for successfully conducting a series of experiments in ecosystem structures and preservation.
She takes a Communications class and does a group video project. Lucy earns a badge for video editing with Final Cut Pro.
Lucy does an internship helping to provide therapy to children through the use of service animals. As a result of demonstrating skills in which she has the kids interact with service dogs, she earns a badge in Child-Animal Interaction. Click here for meta-data associated with this badge.
As an
outside interest, Lucy takes a class in Culinary Arts and earns a badge in food safety, and then one in decorative cake making. The idea is that badges are "stackable" and can lead to a certificate.
