MIND TOOLS
Students engage in higher order thinking and problem-solving when they use concept-mapping tools, timelines, word clouds and puzzles. In this session, we'll explore Internet tools that motivate learners while deepening understanding of core content.
GOOGLE DRAWING is a multi-purpose tool that can be use to create Venn diagrams, word webs, blue prints or charts. Multiple users can collaborate on the same drawing in real-time.
How to Use Google Drawing - This video starts with the basics. In 12 minutes, you will learn everything you need to know to create simple charts or to use this versatile tool to create your own art for documents and presentations.
How to Use Google Drawing in the Classroom - The author of this 3-minute video demonstrates how to create a Venn diagram and a word web using Google Draw.
Help Page for Google Drawing - Here, you can find advanced help for working with Google drawings. For instance, you can lay out drawings precisely with alignment guides, snap-to grids, and auto distribution.
DIIGO is a social bookmarking tool which allows users to bookmark and tag, highlight and annotate and attach sticky notes to web pages. Anything a user adds to a page is stored in the cloud.

TIMELINES are ordered representations of key events within a particular historical period.
Benefits of Timelines:
Timelines are important thinking tools because they help students examine cause and effect relationships and understand context.
Timelines are efficient graphic organizers that allow learners to study periods of time ranging from a day, a year, a century, or the span of an individual's life or of era.
The process of researching and creating a timeline appeals to students' visual, mathematic, and kinesthetic intelligences.
Timelines help students organize content in a variety of ways, from storing information about a topic over time to documenting the sequence of events in a novel.
Timelines can include multimedia elements such as images, video, music or speeches.
Read, Write, Think Lesson - In this lesson students predict when specific inventions were produced and take notes (using a worksheet) to describe their reason for identifying that particular year. Students then work in pairs or small groups to add to their notes, indicating how this portion of the activity confirmed, refined, or changed their thinking about the timelines they are developing. Next, students consult Web resources about inventions to help them revise their timelines for accuracy. Through discussion, they verify the dates and consider the connections between historical events and when inventions were created. The culminating activity is the creation of a timeline using the Read, Write, Think timeline tool.
RUBISTAR (Rubric Generator) - With a well-designed rubric, an instructor can communicate expectations for an assignment, provide focused feedback on works in progress, and grade final products.
Rubistar - This online tool allows you to create, share, and store rubrics.
CONCEPT MAPPING
Google Drawing activity - With Google Drawing, students can create charts, maps, and diagrams using extensive draw tools and an array of colors. Google drawings can be easily incorporated into documents and presentations.
Popplet allows students to quickly brainstorm ideas. Teachers can use it to present an overview of a new unit or to review key concepts. With a free account, you can store up to five maps at a time. Here's a sample.
Popplet Activity - Use the images from the timeline activity to create a map of modern inventions. Include a video from Vimeo to illustrate the creative process of invention.
WORD CLOUDS - A word cloud is an image composed of words in which the size of each word indicates its frequency or importance. Students enjoy creating word clouds because they are expressive and colorful, but word clouds are great learning tools, as well.

DIGITAL GATHERING SPACES
Padlet is a unique visual discussion tool. Participants post sticky notes to walls, playgrounds, maps -- or any of a variety of interesting backgrounds. Teachers can set up free accounts, but students do not need accounts to participate.
Can we teach innovation? That's the topic of this Padlet wall. Add your thoughts and ideas by clicking on the question.
TodaysMeet is another type of gathering space. This tool provides an online meeting room for synchronous or asynchronous conversation. Join this conversation about using TodaysMeet with students.
PUZZLEMAKER is a tool created for educators and students by Discovery Education. With it, you- and your students - can create ten different kinds of customized puzzles.
ECLIPSE CROSSWORD - With this tool, you can create crosswords to review vocabulary and lessons for all subjects. Crossword puzzles encourage logical thinking and correct spelling. Crosswords can be printed or uploaded to your website.
SYMBALOO is a tool that allows teachers to visually organize and share the best of the web with their students. It can also be used to share appropriate links for assignments and research or additional information related to a topic of study. Some teachers use Symbaloo to create a class homepage for students (and parents), providing one-stop access to frequently used Internet resources, websites and tools.
Welcome to My PLE - In this video, a 7th grade student gives viewers a tour of her personal learning environment, which she has created within Symbaloo.
