Inspiring Middle School Literacy (Science and Health) - This site features online self-paced lessons for blended learning. Lessons are designed to enhance the literacy skills of struggling readers in grades 5–8. Each lesson uses videos, interactive activities, note taking, reading, and writing to present students with an engaging science topic. This resource is free (funded by the Walmart Foundation), but teachers must set up classes and enroll students to allow them to use the lessons.
WISE (Web-based Inquiry Science Environment) - WISE project, sponsored by the University of California Berkeley, engages students in the methods of real scientists. Through various activities and scaffolding tools, students collaborate to explore issues of social importance; they pose relevant questions and make predictions; they experiment with computational models; they work to evaluate and distinguish discrepant information; and they construct evidence-based explanations through reflection and discussion. From WISE's inquiry-based projects, students not only learn skills that prepare them to be successful in science, they also learn skills necessary to be responsible, critical thinking citizens.
National Science Digital Library - a tremendous library of science resources; search by educational level, resource type or subject.
Discovery Education - Lesson plans, activities and assessments for grades 6-8 science.
NASA for Educators - NASA provides access to a large database of images, videos, simulations, activities and live events for science classrooms.
Understanding Science - This is a great resource for learning more about the process of science. The site includes teaching resources, along with a searchable archive of articles, tutorials and interactive features.
PhET Interactive Simulations - Research-based simulations of physical phenomena in physics, chemistry and biology; the website also includes a collection of teacher contributed activities, lab experiences, homework assignments and conceptual questions that can be used with the simulations.
Planting Science - A learning community where scientists provide online mentorship to student teams as they design and think through their own inquiry projects.
Wonderopolis - This site features a "wonder of the day," based on a question a student might ask. Teachers and students can explore an archive of past wonders representing investigations in all content areas. For instance, you might wonder, "How are viruses and bacteria different?'
Journey North - A citizen science project that involves students in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal changes Students become scientists as they gather data and report results. The site provides Teacher Resources to assist with lesson planning, alignment to standards in science, and data collection.
National Geographic - A wealth of ideas, activities, interactives, maps, lessons and units for teaching science.
NeoK12 - Organized by topic (physical science, life science, earth and space, and the human body), this site features a collection of resources to support science learning. Activities and quizzes require a subscription, but the video resources are free.
Watch, Know, Learn - WatchKnowLearn has indexed approximately 50,000 educational videos, placing them into a directory of over 5,000 categories. The videos are available without any registration or fees to teachers in the classroom. Select the subject from the directory; then set the age filter. Refine your search by including a key word. Educators are invited to rate videos and to submit additional resources for consideration.
