2020
Undaunted by Covid 19 gathering restrictions, we had a 2020 Ethics Revue anyway!
Well ... actually we were pretty daunted. Sufficiently daunted that our usual November Ethics Revue was presented entirely virtually. The theme was modeled after the Eurovision contest. The judges, after hard deliberation, awarded the Grand Prix to ...
... everybody.
We reused some old songs from the archives and wrote and videotaped about ten new songs. That was also interesting as we mostly taped the new songs in Denver, where we had to wear masks and it was illegal to have more than five people in a room at one time ...
... and the band was three people.
So no new chorus pieces, obviously.
Some singers snuck out of Denver County to record maskless, but outside in the open, COVID-free air.
It came out surprisingly well and was presented virtually to Colorado attorneys beginning in November 2020, just to keep things consistent.
Directed by Christine. Ethics panel Phil.

On February 28, 2020 we sang with a dozen Colorado Judges at Moye White at the traditional Leap Year celebration called, "The Judges Take a Leap." Old and new judges songs. We had it on the 28th, because judges wouldn't be around on the 29th, which was a Saturday.
... and it was the 29th in China anyway.
On Friday February 7, 2020, a lucky thirteen of us entertained the Family Law Section at the CBA classroom with ten old and new songs.

On October 18th, 2019 we performed a judge's ethics-oriented show for the National Appellate Chief Judges Association October 18 at Ellie Caulkins Opera House, downstairs at Kevin Taylor Restaurant. Basically chief judges from the 50 states lower courts of appeal. Diana directing.
Lots of new and old judge songs and very little plot. Lots and lots of security and we got fed too! Some of the out-of-state attendees asked about us performing in their states.
... financing for such an endeavor is yet to be worked out ...
On September 10, 2019 we performed a one-hour show for the Colorado Judges at the Vail Marriott (again in Vail), a repeat of the Inside Out show. Melissa, Yosy, and Christine directing.
Judges said:
"It's the best show you ever have done."
"... as always you and the other cast members were terrific. I look forward to this every year and you never disappoint. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together. Best regards."
On Saturday August 17, 2019 we performed a one-hour show for the Family Law Institute at the Vail Marriott (still in Vail) at 11am, a repeat of the Inside Out show.
Melissa, Yosy, and Christine directing.
2018
On November 13th and 14th, 2018, at the Clocktower Cabaret and again in Boulder on November 29th, the Law Club presented the annual Ethics Revue, for three ethics CLEs and much wine.
The script was based on the movie Inside Out, and was an unusually sensitive theme for the usually raucous Law Club.
Christine, Melissa, and Yosy directing.
Highlights include, though not exhaustively:
On September 24th, 2018, at the Vail Marriot (that's in Vail) we reprised the 2017 Ethics Review for one hour for all the Colorado judges and justices. Frankenstein's monster shambles again.
Julie and Brian directing.
On August 24th, 2018, in Grand Junction at a Court of Appeals function, at the historic Avalon Theater, a small group of Law Clubbers performed a one-hour reprise of various Law Club songs for one ethics credit.
Christine, Mark, Melissa, Ben, Director Diana, Big Words Greg, Pianist Hank, and Ethics Panel Phil.
2017
On November 30, 2017 we reprised the annual Ethics Revue in Boulder at some theater.
Oh right. The Nomad Theater. A real stage. Curtains. Many, many last-minute actor substitutions. Wine and cheese. A good effort.
Once again the 2017 November Ethics Revue, on the 14th and 15th, was at the Clocktower Cabaret and featured a Frankenstein-like plot to replace expensive associates with random body parts. There was much dancing, including All That Jazz, Thriller, and the Time Warp. Notable was a remarkable version of the Chicago musical's Cell Block Tango. Julie and Greg C. directing. Big Words Greg Stutz.

Tuesday September 12, 2017 in Vail we performed again for an hour for 70 plus Colorado Judges (and most of the Justices). Willy Wonka again. They seemed to like it as there have been no reported repercussions in any courtroom so far. Patrick directing.
We performed another Willy Wonka reprise at the Sheraton Hotel in a tiny room for the National Association of Court Staff Attorneys on July 14, 2017. No green room with M&Ms, unfortunately. We kinda remember getting fed however, so that was good. Patrick directing.
On April 20, 2017, the Law Club reprised the Ethics Revue for an appreciative Boulder audience at the Nomad Theater. Different players in different parts and an especially funny Ethics Committee Panel. Patrick directing.
2016
November 15 and 16, 2016 the Law Club performed the three hour annual Ethics Revue at the Clocktower Cabaret on the 16th Street Mall. We would call this our first underground show, but the Cabaret theater has always been underground. Patrick directing.
The theme was based on Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and prominently featured slightly taller-than-original Oompa Lumpas.
The 75 person live audience each night were enthusiastic and happy, though the dinner, the three hours of CLE ethics credit, and the free drink tickets may have contributed to that.
October 18, 2016 saw us at the Chop House in Denver for the CBA Construction Bar with a shortened version of the last Ethics Revue. Again crammed into a corner. Doug directing.
On Tuesday September 13, 2016, at the Colorado Judicial Conference the Law Club performed a one hour version of the 2015 Ethics Revue for 75+ Colorado judges. Doug directing. The judges seems enthusiastic about attending and listening, or that may be because they got lunch.
February 29, 2016, was the quadrennial Judges Leap Year presentation, observed in the lobby of the Colorado Supreme Court building. If you are to celebrate judges, go where the judges are!
Many, many judges attended, or at least walked through the lobby on their way home.
2015
November 17th and 18th 2015 was the tenth Law Club Ethics Revue, again both nights at Lannie Garrett's Clocktower Cabaret.
The edgy theme, 9.1 Shades of Gray, featured the beautiful character Ashley Madison as a novice attorney, drawn to unethical acts by the dark phantom-like partner of the law firm.
Acappella, dancers, remarkable soloists, and even some acting ... another wonderful annual Ethics Revue.

In 2015 the Law Club participated in the creation and taping of some newer Supreme Court/CBA Professionalism videos that are used for mandatory new-lawyer professionalism training and CLEs.

2014
November 4th and 5th, 2014 was the 9th Law Club Ethics Revue, sponsored by the CBA CLE and Ethics Committee.
Our two night, three hour show, directed by Melissa, was attended by a hundred attorneys, judges, and guests who sang and cheered and clapped and were the perfect audience. Our songs were new and old, as was our cast and band and ethics panel.
The theme was the Hunger Games, pitting young attorneys against each other for a fight to the finish.
... or till the three hours was up.
Melissa directed.

We were in Vail on September 9th, 2014 for the annual judicial conference's final lunch and 200 state judges. David S came out of apparent retirement to direct our 20 person cast and 6 man band. The judges and magistrates stood clapping for us at the end, and apparently for the most part were not just leaving ...
2014 Centennial Celebration!!!
On April 25th and 26th, 2014 at the historic Broadmoor in Colorado Springs several hundred Law Club members from many generations gathered to celebrate the Law Club Centennial, with a former-chair's dinner and sing-along, three separate complete Law Club shows from different Law Club eras, and an extra special 100th annual dinner meeting.
On the evening of Friday, April 25th the former Law Club Presidents and families and other members met for dinner and songs. The Club subsidized rooms at the Broadmoor for 80 members and their families. On Saturday, April 26th, Law Club memorabilia were available for perusal upstairs in the original Broadmoor building in the morning and members met informally for breakfast, lunch, and much golf.
The audience was the chorus. At 3:30 pm began the Middle Ages Show, directed by Diana, highlighting productions from 1988 to 2000.
We took a break at 5 pm and then met in the Golf Club at 6 for our 100th annual dinner meeting; as usual a raucous event with jokes, speeches, stories, the transfer of what little power the officers have, and dinner roll flinging. We went long enough that the 8 pm final show started pretty late.
And then, at 1:30 pm, in the Broadmoor private movie theater Judge Bob and Cliff directed the Oldtimers Show, songs and skits from the glory years of the Law Club, prior to 1988.
The final Centennial show, directed by David L and Melissa, began back in the movie theater at about 8:30 pm, and reprised dancing, singing, and what passes for Law Club acting from the modern period, 2000 to 2014. The Law Club stalwarts stayed right there till about 10:30 when we wrapped it all up.
Thank you for all who attended, and contributed funds, and sang and danced.
For those of you who missed this Centennial, be sure to put the next Centennial in your calendar for Friday and Saturday, April 23rd and 24th, 2114, so that you don't miss the next one.
2014 Pre-Centennial Denver Press Club Party
On April 9th, 2014 seventy-five to one hundred former, current, and future members of the historic Law Club joined together at the historic Denver Press Club on the night before the actual centennial day, in the first of many celebrations of the Law Club Centennial.
This pre-celebration was to allow the Denver folks who were not able (or could afford) to travel to the Broadmore in Colorado Springs. It was wonderfully conceived and arranged by Marion and Greg C. The party featured dinner and drinks, camaraderie, a show rehearsal, the traditional cheese cutting ceremony featuring cheese-cutting celebrities including Chuck Turner, Norm Early, Gary Abrams, and Valerie among other Law Club stars, the magnificent Doug T as host of the Centennial Auction, and ending with often striking, usually loud, and sometimes talented karaoke provided by sometimes-music-director Cecil Pearson, that lasted well into the evening.
2013
On November 4th and 5th, 2013, the Law Club performed the Austin Powers themed and eighth version of the Ethics Revue, again at Lannie Garretts Clocktower Cabaret.
Dr. Evil was evil and Mini Me was, indeed, mini. The Clocktower wouldn't let us bring in our evil white cat, however.
The critics raved:
From The Downtown Denver Bicycle Parking Lot News:
Law Club Show Hits High Notes: Panel says "It's Not Unethical!"
By Ed. E. Toreal, special to the DDBPLN
The Law Club has done it again! The highly-professional cast of attorneys and judges as shown here in a pictures from last-night's performance of "Austin Powers: International Man of Ethics." Under the superb direction of Judge Diana, the cast and musicians entertained crowds at Lannie's Cabaret for the 4th year in a row!
The audience cheered as the unethical antics of Dr. Evil, Mini-Me, and their hench people Number 2, the Client Communicating Cowboy, the Unethical Associate, and Managing Partner Frau Overlein, were foiled by Jamie Bond, Austin Powers, and The Law Club! Ethical experts Ray, Amy, Gregory and Alec kept their interesting and entertaining commentary moving. A veritable zoo showed up to dream of advertising under the new rules cooked up by panelist Alec Rothrock. Judge Ray Satter clarified that it is now OK for lawyers to represent marijuana dispensaries and to smoke pot. Except when it isn't.
The DDBPLN was delighted by the gorgeous harmonies and catchy tunes used by the cast of talented singers and dancers, although we missed our favorite sea shanties. Maybe the Club can bring back that all-copyright-free-show next year. And another thing: Our focus group complained that people kept singing while the lovely Melissa, Yosy, and Ann were dancing. Maybe the Club can do away with the distractions next time.
The musicians, many of whom seem to be judges (don't they have ethical canons about this kind of thing?) were first-rate, complementing the musicians in every possible way. Maybe that piano player should give up law and turn pro!
The show was well-done, very tight (as was much of the cast, we hear), and may be reprised at a theater or Inn of Court near you.
On June 13, 2013 in the afternoon we entertained the alumni at the DU Law School in the commons with a shortened version of the 2012 Ethics Revue. There was no booze and so they were sober. They loved us anyway and took us to a bar. Brenda directed and Mark made Anne laugh.
2012
On December 6, 2012 we presented to the Marsh Inn of Court at the University Club. Last minute line changes made it more interesting. Doug saved the day ... again ... yawn ...
November 12th and 13th, 2012, was the seventh-ever incredible 2012 Ethics Revue; once again two nights at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret. The second night was standing room only and by the end of the show the whole crowd was standing. And applauding and shouting and screaming ... The November 19th Law Week Colorado front page article (which was on page 3 that week) shouted "Ethics Revue Does Impossible" and goes on "Well, they did it again ..."
On Tuesday September 11, 2012 at the Vail Marriott (which is in Vail) we again entertained at the annual Colorado Judicial Conference. The judges didn't stand up for us as we took the stage, but they did as we got ready to leave ... It was a good show ...
In March 2012 the remarkable Law Club band, Judicial Notice, with chanteuse Brenda, entered the ABA Battle of the Bands contest with this following video treat. Oddly, the ABA picked a different band, though none of the other entrants were even close.
On February 29th, 2012 at Moye White we again held the Law Club's Leap Day "Judges of the Law Club" Celebration. With songbooks in hand the judges and magistrates of the Law Club led the crowd in raucous sing-along celebration, well into the evening, until the booze ran out ...

The Critics shouted:
DENVER, COLORADO. Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret was awash with laughter and learning last night as the Law Club and the CBA Ethics Committee brought their own special brand of edu-tainment to LoDo. A panel of distinguished panelists provided witty commentary about Ethical issues in between a story of litigation on the high seas. While one member of the panel droned on a bit too long at the beginning, the situation was corrected when he was kidnapped by pirates early in the program. *** [Excerpted and reprinted with permission from the Denver Bicycle Parking Lot News, November 16, 2011]***
Downtown Denver Bicycle Parking Lot News proclaims Pirates of the COBAR the Best Pirate-Themed Ethics CLE You Will See This Year!
Not realizing that they had also been duped into boarding a pirate ship under false pretenses, the audience truly enjoyed stellar performances by the actors, singers and dancers, including a Mark solo that left panelist Marcy "verklempt." (As a side note, between the costumes, an Al Gore striptease in Act II, and a certain song that is not in the program, the show has lost its "G" rating. Don't bring the kids.)
On Tuesday September 13, 2011, in Colorado Springs, the Club entertained the state judges at their Annual Conference with tales of judicial ethics.
Another standing ovation, and a remarkable last-minute substitution by Judge Diana when someone got stuck on Vail Pass.
At the show for the CWBA on June 11, 2011 at 3 pm in Vail the room was half-full at the beginning, but there was standing room only after the intermission. Even the bridge players came.
An errant mouse threatened us all, but Director Doug crooned us back into place. Another standing ovation.
