Shows from 2000-2010

2010

On November 18, 2010 we sang for 600 lawyers and judges; and Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey, at the Marriott for the CJI Dinner; a smaller version of the Ethics Revue.  Our biggest crowd ever!
Barb directed.

Vide of the Show (Not exactly the best quality)

The Law Club's 2010 Ethics Revue with the CBA CLE and Ethics Committee took place at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret on the evenings of September 22 and 23, 2010.
The Avatar-themed show featured very tall and blue people and much smaller, but more attractive, dancers.
Three hours ethics CLE. Barbara directed.

The next day reviews rave:

DENVER, COLORADO

(First Night Review)

"This show has shattered every record for box office draws!  I've never seen anything like it!"  cried Denver entertainment empress Lannie Garrett, shaking her head in wonder.  "We've never had a crowd like this for any Ethics Revue ever held here at my cabaret.  Disappointed patrons were turned away from the standing-room only crowd.  Of course, we've never held an Ethics Revue at my cabaret . . ."

The crowd streaming out of the cabaret at 8:40 p.m. was aglow with good feeling (or maybe it was the free drinks).  Post-show accolades, tributes, and fake, dusty flowers poured in to cast and crew alike.  CBA CLE's Gary Abram promised another fun-filled show the following evening, possibly with a full ethics panel.

Said one patron:   "I can't believe we get ethics credit along with three hours of laughter and song. . . we were howling.  The whole show was amazingly entertaining, well, except for a couple times when the ethics panel went on too long, . . . but you whipped them back in line. There were so many good songs that will now be indelibly branded into my brain, with alternate lyrics.  I'm sure that there was enormous hard work behind the scenes but it looked like everyone had a ball. "

(Second night review)

The Ethics Revue played to a very appreciative, packed house at Lannie's last night, surpassing previous box-office records.  The cast, perhaps fueled by the same food as the grown-ups, or the sponsored liquor (thanks, Dana and Rick F. !!!), surpassed its previous performance and put on a show like none ever seen before.  Stunned by the production values, the CBA hired a roving cameraman to capture onstage moments and cast action in the cabaret -- a first!  There will be a good deal of post-production editing before the final DVD is issued.  The Ethics Panel, suitably cowed by the threat of appellate reversal, purchased wristwatches at the Kiosk outside the Clocktower, borrowed Charles' flashlight to see them, and kept to the schedule.

The cast celebrated its brilliant performance outdoors at The Palm. The good feeling spilled over into singing. Evening visitors to Skyline Park noted that it was curiously free of the usual night-time riffraff.  This reporter caught up with a disgruntled drug dealer, who had moved two streets over from his usual point of commerce at 17th and Arapahoe, to ask him why he had moved.

"Had I wished to hear these particular tunes and lyrics, I would have spent $179 and purchased a ticket to the Ethics Revue," is a rough translation of his response.  "I wonder to whom I might direct a complaint for lost income?"

In a somber note, the director of the show was found later in a fruit-induced stupor at her home, with strawberry juice smeared around her face.

We visited with the judges and magistrates of the 18th Judicial District on September 14, 2010, at noon at the Douglas County Courthouse. The judges stood up for us this time. Getting the piano through courthouse security was interesting.
Judge Diana directed.

We sang and danced for the national organization called National Conference of Chief Justices (NCCJ) and Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA) on July 28th, 2010 in Vail. There were guards with assault rifles. Really.
The date was originally July 27th but some Irish lady named Sandra Day O’Conner got our original gig.
We got a standing ovation. Not sure if she did. Some of the Justices wanted us to come sing in their home states. We are still negotiating who pays the plane fare ...
Judge Diana directed.

2009

We sang and danced for various Inns of Court on 11/18/09 (Doyle) and 12/15/09 (Rhone Brackett and Arraj) at the University Club.
Brenda directed.

The show on October 22, 2009 in Colorado Springs was for the Wendlekin Inn of Court; a very appreciative audience of about 60. Still not the Broadmore ...
Barbara was the director.

We played September 3, 2009 at the University Club for the Thompson Marsh Inn.
Brenda directed.

The Law Club's Ethics Revue Four occurred twice on July 9, 2009, at the CBA classroom. Long, long day, still wearing bow ties and cummerbunds, and we only got fed once.
The Indiana Jones and the Lost Art of Civility Show.
Not exactly the best venue ever. Definitely not the Marriott ...
Brenda directed. Great show.

Pictures

On June 5, 2009, we played for an ABA Bar Fellows at the University Club. Bigger stage. Brenda directed but was the same size.

On April 7, 2009, we played the University Club for two Inns of Court. Nobody went to the hospital.
Brenda directed.

2008

We were at the Botanic Gardens on December 8, 2008 for the Metro Attorneys. Great room. Lots of oxygen.
Brenda directed.

On November 6, 2008, we sang for two blended Inns on a tiny stage at the University Club. It was ... interesting. It will be remembered as The 2008 Fall Show. At least one member went to the hospital.
We got a standing ovation but it may have been merely because everybody survived ... Brenda directed.

We sang on September 28, 2008, in Breckenridge at the 2008 Judicial Conference. It was at lunch and was the first of many times that we have now performed for Judicial Conference.
The judges and magistrates were sober (as a judge) and they liked us anyway -- a lot ...
Brenda directed.

On May 3rd, 2008 in Vail we sang for the first time for the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. The "big words" projector turned itself off during Judge Pat’s song. She had her song memorized fortunately and the rest of us had spare scripts. Little did we know that this would presage similar  mysterious technical errors at every successive CWBA show.
David L directed.

The Arraj Inn of Court was at the U. Club on April 22,2008, for a Law Club Show. Or maybe it was the other way around.
David L directed.

On April 12th 2008 we performed for the Gilpin County Historical Society … in Boulder County. The Stage Stop Inn; not actually in Gilpin County but just over the county line, so we had a quick exit through Nederland, just in case. Crammed once again into a corner, this time behind a piano. David L directed.

2007

Once again we created the Ethics Revue (number three, if anybody is keeping track) at the CBA offices on October 24, 2007 -- two shows, the second with dinner.
It wasn't the Hyatt grand, but ... not bad, all in all.
Assistant associate middle school teacher Barbara directed.

Cast Party Pictures

September 18, 2007, we were in Vail with a one-hour show at the Colorado Judicial Conference. This was our premiere performance for the state judges. We had no idea in 2007 that they would like us enough to bring us back again and again.
The director was Judge Ken.

On Friday May 18, 2007 we entertained the Colorado DAs in Keystone. Judge Ken directed. He was still a Denver DA at that point and the Denver DAs still were part of the Colorado DA’s association at that point ...
Then not ...
Then back again.

2007 Law Club Reunion

February 3rd 2007 was the 2007 Law Club Reunion at the Broadmoor. Directed by  Judge Ken and Judge Bob.
It is absolutely true that one senior member reprised a years-earlier appearance dressed only in a diaper. Names have been excised to protect the less-than innocent.

2006

Because the first Ethics Revue in 2005 actually broke even for the CBA, the CBA  green-lighted us to do it again!
Well, not again. New show, new songs, some new players.
We did two shows for three ethics CLEs and dinner and drinks on December 13, 2006,  again at the Grand Hyatt. The theme was the Wizard of Oz.
The second annual Ethics Revue!
Director Ken.

Pictures

On December 7, 2006 we sang for the Thompson Marsh Inn of Court at the University Club.
David S. directed

October 13, 2006. we sang at the University Club for the ABA Governmental Lawyers. Wizard of Oz theme again. They would only feed a certain number of us at their tables, so we all ate in the kitchen.
Josiah directing

Saturday June 10, 2006 was performed for the Gilpin County Historical Society show at Scarlett's (formerly Bullwhacker's) casino in Central City.
David L. directing.

On June 1, 2006, (or maybe the 2nd) we performed "The DaVinci Code of Ethics" at the Westin in  Westminster to 250 IP lawyers, who once again were fairly quiet, despite our show being hysterically funny.
We had a good time.
... and they only gave us 20 minutes. We sang really fast.
David L. directed and wrote a new song 20 minutes before the performance.

On May 19th we performed for the Colorado Access to Justice, probably at the Grand Hyatt in Denver. A high point was the short judges song, Judges Taubman, Kapelke, Chief Judge Davidson.
The venue changed to a larger location at the last minute. We like to think it was  because the Law Club was performing.
David L. directed.

On February 15, 2006, a small group played for the CBA Law, Technology & Policy section  at the Governor's Mansion. Also a small group.
Somebody directed. Maybe David or Diana or Brenda or Christine, or all of them.

2005

In the early morning on Saturday December 17, 2025, a small group of the Law Club reprised parts of the 1st Ethics Revue for the CBA Ethics Committee at the CBA, which made sense as the Ethics Committee is a co-sponsor of the Ethics Revue and wanted to know what they were getting into.
We got to eat the Ethics Committee's bacon and eggs for breakfast, too!
David S. directing.

On December 15, 2005, we performed with a small group for the Greenwood Village Chamber of Commerce at the Wyndham Hotel.
David S. still directing.

Relying heavily on Campell v. Acuff Rose Music, 510 US 569 (1994), October 27, 2005, was the very first Ethics Revue. The Law Club, with sponsorship by the CBA CLE and CBA Ethics Committee, performed at the Denver Hyatt.
Still fumbling toward the concept, but the two shows, matinee (with booze) and dinner (with dinner and booze), went surprisingly well.
Still wearing red bow ties and cummerbunds and sea shanties were prevalent.
David S. directing. Not sure.

Some lawyer reviews:

"The Law Club was very entertaining"

"Great singers - good dialogue"

"Terrific!"

"Do it again!"

"PLEASE do it again!"
"This is really fun!  I normally take the end of year CLE to get my credits.  By the

time I get through that, I'm ready to take hemlock, just to end it all.   But you guys are great!"

On August 25, 2005 the Law Club presented a sort of dress rehearsal, a one-hour live performance of the proposed Ethics Revue. We had no idea if this novel idea would get off the ground. Our audience was the Colorado Inns of Court Summit members and spouses in Denver's University Park. We insisted that there be alcohol.
It came off very well, perhaps aided by the alcohol, and we determined to press on, raise the flag, and find out if anybody would salute in October for the actual three hour show.
Diana directing.

Once again, on April 2, 2005, we trekked up Highway 119 to the Royal Flamingo room of the Isle of Capri Casino in Black Hawk  for another production for the Gilpin County Historical Society.
The Ka-ching and Killarney show.  It was a gamble, but we got fed.
David S. directing, again.

The Historical Society said:
The Gilpin County Historical Society appreciates you witty people tremendously!  We can't express our gratitude for your composing and rehearsing time for our benefit.  The musical was hilarious and everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously, and your reputation for a fun evening grew even larger.  We really appreciate your efforts and want you to know that.

2004

We sang, once again, for the Colorado Municipal Attorneys League on Wednesday night, December 15, 2004, at the Oxford Hotel in LoDo.
This was our fourth show with this organization--they apparently like us.
David S.  and Cecil directed.

A small group sang Thursday, December 9th for 60 folks of the Greenwood Village Chamber of Commerce, at the Sheraton Hotel DTC for a lunch meeting.
David S. and Cecil directing.

We drove up to Blackhawk to perform for the Gilpin County Historical Society the evening of Friday, September 10th at the Flamingo Room of the Isle of Capri Casino.  The show was named "The KaChing and I."
... or a "FLING at the FLamiNGo," depending on which email you read.
David S. (the usual one) directing.

On March 1, 2004 the Law Club held the quadrennial judges Leap Year Celebration at Gorsuch Kirgis LLP on Arapahoe Street.
Why on March 1st? Because February 29th was on a Sunday, and judges don't drink on Sundays, right?
A different David S., David Se., organizing.

2003

We sang again on December 11th at 6 p.m. at the Greenbriar Inn north of Boulder for the Colorado Municipal Attorneys League. Crammed in a corner again.
Colleen organizing.

December 5, 2003, we performed at Maggianos  in downtown Denver for the Worker's Compensation section of the CBA
Colleen organizing.

December 1, 2003 we sang at the CBA offices for the annual CBA/CLE Appreciation Party. We are pretty sure they appreciated us.
Colleen organizing.

On January 10, 2003 we sang for over 300 lawyers and spouses at the  Colorado Bar Foundation's annual dinner. They seemed to be amused.
David S. directed

2002

We sang at the Fort for the Metro City Attorneys Association on December 11, 2002. Crammed in a corner again, but the food was good.
Director David S.

Rave Reviews:
One attorney told us the Law Club was the highlight of the evening, and several spouses told us it was the best holiday dinner they’ve ever attended.

We sang on Friday October 25th, 2002, at 3:30 PM, at the University of Denver College of Law for the Colorado Bar Association Access to Justice Awards Reception.
Director David S.

2001

On 12/12/2001 we bused up to the Sylvan Dale Ranch for the Metro City Attorneys annual holiday party. The bus sing-along with non-judge Ken playing guitar on the bus was fun.
Director Theresa M., musical director Judge Ken.

We probably sang for the DBA Summer Intern Program - Student Training on 6/21/01 ... maybe. We may also have been drunk in a karaoke bar somewhere.
Theresa M. organizing.

2000

On November 8, 2000, we did a charity benefit for Opera Colorado at the Shwayder Theater. A real stage !! ... and a reprise of Channel Surfin' USA. Director Judge Diana, producer Nina.

We performed a Channel Surfin' USA reprise on September 27, 2000, for the Arraj Inn of Court at the Brown Palace.
Director Diana.

The very last two-hour show at a CBA Convention, Channel Surfin' USA, was September 9th, 2000, in Keystone, Colorado, directed by Diana.

The CBA abandoned having annual meetings after that year. We deny that our show had anything to do with that.

Pictures

We very likely did the usual quadrennial Leap-Year Judges party, inviting as many judges as possible to come hear us sing satirical songs about them, at some location on February 29, 2000.
There was an open bar but we are certain that had nothing to do with the great attendance by the judges.
Probably directed, or at least organized, by Dana.
