It is easier than you might think to create your own media content. Below are some suggested resources:
Screenshots - Microsoft's Snipping Tool
You can easily take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen but using Microsoft's built-in Snipping Tool. To access this feature, use the start menu to search for Snipping Tool. See this link for detailed instructions. If you have a MAC computer, see this link on how to take a screenshot with a MAC.
Video Creation with or without Webcam (Screencasting)
Screencasting allows you to:
add voice to your PowerPoint presentations to deliver a lecture online
give verbal and visual feedback to students on their homework assignment
record a quick video of your screen to show your students how to perform a task
We recommend several different applications depending on your specific needs or preferences.
Panopto
Panopto is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED cross-platform formal option to consider. Panopto is our campus supported media management system that integrates with Canvas, making it easy to seamlessly add, create, edit, share and interact with videos within course sites. Perfect for video based lectures and assignments.
Highlights Include:
Record professional-looking videos of yourself and your on-screen content.
Upload videos in any format. Panopto converts them for playback on any device.
Securely share videos with students, colleagues or anyone with an email address.
Manage your videos in a YouTube-like portal with viewing analytics and secure streaming.
Edit videos from any web browser. Trim content, combine videos, add slides, and embed quizzes.
Search inside videos to find and fast-forward to any word spoken or shown on-screen
To start using Panopto in your course, enable the tool and put it on your course menu by clicking Settings > Navigation > Enable Panopto. Once the link is established, there is no additional login is required.
Loom
Loom is a simple video messaging tool that lets you quickly record your screen, camera, or both, and instantly share the link—making it easy to explain ideas, give feedback, or provide step-by-step instructions without scheduling a meeting. It is not formally integrated with Canvas (share videos via URL link).
Microsoft Stream
Microsoft Stream (ClipChamp) is a secure video platform that allows you to upload, store, organize, and share videos (DelVal login required). Integrated with Microsoft 365, it supports features like closed captions, searchable transcripts, and easy sharing—making it ideal for training, lectures, announcements and collaborative projects.
Screencastify
Screencastify is one of the 'oldest' yet easiest ways for anyone to quickly capture their entire desktop, browser tab or webcam. Just open the Chrome browser, install the extension and you can quickly start casting in just a couple of clicks (only works with Chrome, limited to 10 videos, 30 minutes of recording)
Record Voice Over PowerPoint
If you have a microphone, you can add voice (personal narration) to a PowerPoint presentation by clicking on the Slide Show tab and selecting Record Slide Show:
Then create a video package (embed the audio into the PowerPoint) in order to share it online with others. To do so, click on the File tab and complete the four steps shown below:
Click here for more detailed instructions. Note that these instructions relate to Microsoft PowerPoint 365. If you are using a different version of PowerPoint or another application, search online for "how to embed audio in [whatever you are using]".
Last BUT NOT LEAST...
There are many other recommended options to explore such as YouTube, Zoom and more.
NOTE that large files (any audio/video files over a minute or two) need to be placed on media hosting sites (such as those mentioned on this page) or uploaded to your campus OneDrive account and shared via URL. Canvas cannot create or host large media files directly. See directions on how to Share Large Files using OneDrive for more information.
