* Note on Indicators: Impact factor are viewed as measuring the important of an outlet. In theory, the more a paper has been cited, the more influential the paper is. At the journal level, the influence is the average (or sum) of a journal’s paper influence. This influence is gauged by its impact factor score (IFS). The IFS is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a given period of time (typically up to 2 years after publication). For instance, if a paper was published in 2006, the impact factor measures how often—on average—it was cited up to 2 years later; thus, a journal’s IFS is an indicator of how often it’s articles have been cited over a period of time. While there are many indicators of a journal’s quality, typically, more influential journals tend have higher IFSs. The IFS, ranks, and other statistics listed above are based on Thomson’s 2008 Journal Citation Report (JCR). The rankings are based on the relative order of the IFSs within discipline.
