Dan Harvey Jazz Vocals
As a jazz vocalist, Dan aims for perfection in his art. Influenced by the “West Coast Cool Jazz” of Chet Baker,
His Love for R'n'B's Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire and all the other usual suspects throughs Dan's inspiration into overdrive and finds his voice and stylistic interpretation along with his heavy handed approach to laying down the time, crafty for this style music and performance.
Dan was exposed to Jazz singing at high school as part of the
“Outback Jazz Vocal Ensemble”.
This group performed across Australia and Japan as part of the “Outback Oz Ensemble”, under the guidance of teachers, Johnston Parkinson and Fiona Anderson.
In 1997 Dan made Adelaide home and studied Jazz Voice at the
Adelaide Elder Conservatoriam of Music
Under Instruction of Associate Professor Connaitre Miller,
Dan’s understanding of jazz singing grew, with his integrity as a jazz vocalist, paramount. Connaitre reset the vocalist within, tuning Dan’s approach to music and his appreciation of the finer qualities of jazz singing.
These finer qualities have taken time to develop and mature into the vocalist we hear today.
The culmination of Daniel's jazz vocal musicality is released through the Daniel Harvey Quintet. A perfect line-up of the finest jazz musicians in Australia performing arrangements and transcriptions of jazz standards and Latin grooves.
Daniel conceived the Quintet in his second year of studies at Elder Conservatorium.
Off the back of performances with the "Kym Perling Trio", Dan organised a recording session with the "Boss Trio" -- Ben Riley (drums), Tim Bowen (double bass) and Dave McEvoy (piano). Nick Moulder was also in on the session to add his cool trombone antics and solos to the West Coast Cool Jazz. Recording 5 or 6 tracks live on to a DAT recorder with two mic's (Fostex ribbon for the room and EV N/D 757B for vocals), the session was so good that the Boss Trio and Bob Jeffries went on (the following week) to record a whole album "Boss Trio" using the same simplistic setup .
