BIOMASS - MITI|80PRIME

BIOgeophysical characterization of Microbial Activity in SoilS

BIOMASS is a MITI | 80 PRIME Research Grant (130 k€) funded by CNRS from 2022 to 2025

The interdisciplinary research project BIOMASS is hosted by UMR 7619 METIS in collaboration with UMR 7618 iEES at Sorbonne University.

Started in October 2022, BIOMASS will run until November 2025 (MITI website).

Project abstract

In the present context of climate change, understanding and monitoring the carbon cycle is of primary importance. In the BIOMASS project, we focus on the carbon that is present in the soil. Microbial degradation of organic carbon in soil is often linear as a function of the square root of time, suggesting that the process is diffusion limited. This project aims to characterize the aqueous phase (connectivity/tortuosity) connected to degraders in order to better understand how diffusion processes regulate microbial decomposition of organic carbon. In order to achieve this, we will combine geophysical and microbial analyses.
