Thailand (Feb 2020)

This ride proved to be much harder than I expected. The route, I picked was much more hilly than I thought and the heat much harder to bear.    We left NYC January 31,  2020, and flew to Bangkok thru Japan. Spent 2 days in Bangkok and rented two Trek-Merlins (23" frame) for $200 for 11 days (both).  (https://www.velothailand.com) we flew the (boxed) bikes (AirAsia) from DMK to Chumphon ($35).    The 275 mile ride started the next day taking Rt 4 west over the mountains (towards the border with Myanmar) and then down the west coast, staying on Rt 4 all the way to Phuket, in 6 days total. The temperature rose to 90F - 93F every day by 10am. it was very humid and by the third day we both suffered from sun-stroke and dehydration. We saw no other cyclists on the road at all. The next day we decided to start riding as early as 6:30 am and then we saw many cyclists riding along. By 10am we would be taking our first major break.    On both the 3rd and 4th days we had to hitch a ride with locals, just to get over stretches of hilly road which we could not handle due to the extreme heat and humidity, so we probably rode 245 miles out of the 275 mile long route. Local Thai people were very kind and generous with us.  We spent  2 days in Phuket (incl boat ride to Phi-Phi Islands), before taking AirAsia back to Bangkok to return the bikes and fly home.      Total budget apprx $3,000 for two adults.  We stayed in 3 -4 star hotels for $50 per night on average.  We drank bottled water only, and used the many "7-Eleven" stores as cooling stations.  By the time we were ready to fly back to NYC, the Corona virus epidemic had peaked in China and spreading globally.  The airline cancelled our flight from HKG to Kennedy airport in New York.  We had to do a long layover in HKG and catch a flight to Frankfurt, Germany for another long layover, before boarding a flight to JFK.

On day three and four, dehydration and sun-stroke forced us to hitch a ride with locals, in order to get over some hilly parts of the route.  Thank you, Thai folks!
