Health Literacy and Cancer Prevention: Do People Understand What They Hear?
This 5-year study is a core project of the CRN 3. The multi-disciplinary team includes investigators from five CRN sites and external collaborators. Over 1,000 health plan members from four CRN sites have completed the two new health literacy tests and a variety of other measures. These data, in conjunction with clinical data extracted from the CRN’s virtual data warehouse, provide the foundation for a series of studies exploring the relationship between health literacy and cancer prevention.
The New Health Literacy Tests
Using a careful test development process, the team has developed a pair of complementary tests to measure adults’ comprehension of both spoken and written messages related to cancer prevention and screening.
The CMLT-Listening is self-administered via a touchscreen laptop computer. No reading is required. It includes 45 items and takes approximately 1 hour.
The CMLT-Reading is self-administered on paper. It includes 21 items and takes approximately 10 minutes.

Interested in Collaborating?
The Health Literacy Team welcomes discussion about possible collaboration. We currently have a wealth of data on over 1,000 adult health plan members from 4 states (Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, and Massachusetts). In addition to scores on the two new health literacy tests (the CMLT-Listening and the CMLT-Reading) we have data on the following variables:
