COSMOS CATALOGUE

Southern Sky

The following list contains well known or interesting objects that cover a range of types suited to the beginner and experienced observer alike. Selected objects from declination 00 to -90 are listed. You will note a column headed Meridian 2200 hrs. This shows the month and day that the object in question culminates (that is crosses the meridian) at 2200hrs NZST. An object that crosses the meridian on July 1 at 2200 hrs NZST will cross the meridian on July 31 at 2000 hrs NZST, two hours earlier. Dates of meridian (2200) passage from the first Sunday in October to the third Sunday in March need to be corrected for Daylight Saving time. Therefore meridian passage takes place on the date shown at 2300 hrs. Alternatively, add 14 days to the date shown for a meridian passage at 2200 hrs.

All these objects can be seen well at other times, around two months either side of the given date for objects at lower declinations while objects closer to the south polar region will be circumpolar, so use this column as a guide only. The RA and Dec. co-ordinates are rounded to the nearest minute, those up to .5 downwards and those from .6 to .9 upwards. Right Ascension and Declination co-ordinates are for epoch 2000.

The 2 last columns give the Uranometria (UR) and Sky Atlas 2000 (SA) page numbers where the objects can be found.
