General Objectives
There are four general objectives in each day's activities at the Conservation Camp:
- Overall safety and well-being
- Skill training and practice
- Task completion
- Leadership training
Of course, these are closely-related activities.
General Structure
The Conservation Camp is organized in three distinct tiers:
- Camp Director
- Team Leaders
- Team Members
The "Base Camp" is the location where everyone gathers while not out on the trail. The Base Camp has the following facilities:
- "Portable" toilets and showers.
- Potable water.
- Dry food storage.
- Community work tables.
- Community rain shelter (for meetings, not sleeping)
- Portable power.
- Shared equipment (see Shared Equipment List).
Each individual is responsible for the following:
- Tent.
- Sleeping system (sleeping bag, comfort mat, ground cloth).
- Day pack.
- Personal equipment (see Required Equipment List).
- Personal equipment storage (e.g., rain protection).
- Clothes (including boots, rain gear).
- Food utensils.
- Nighttime lights.
Camp Director Responsibilities
Camp Operations
- Coordinates the Base Camp food-service activities.
- Oversees the health and well-being of all camp members.
- Has primary responsibility for all emergency situations.
- Assigns tasks needed to maintain the camp infrastructure.
- Serves as liaison to the Field School Director.
- Purchases needed supplies and equipment.
- Maintains (with the support staff) the data backup facilities.
- Coordinates information flow from the Field School Director and the support staff.
Program Activities
- Establishes the camp schedule.
- Specifies the skill-training activities.
- Reviews each team's daily "flight plan."
- Periodically runs safety drills.
- Reviews each team's progress on training and project completion.
