Through my studies and professional work I have shown political influence and governance competency by:
Reflection:
Being involved in many different organizations both in and out of education, I am aware of the politics that are present and for leaders of those organizations, understanding how to navigate the political system and connect the school to the stakeholders is necessary for a successful school district. Before the program, I had not experienced the political structure of a school in the perspective of the administrator. I was accustomed to a teacher's role in the system, mainly knowing that there were many moving parts that play factors in decisions, but I was mostly unaware of the underlying motivations or reasons.
After taking on an increased role in my school, I learned more about the proper channels to take when trying to find support, whether that be financially or to introduce a new program or practice. I also have a better understanding of the whole picture when it comes to an important decision and the implications that decision has on both sides of the pendulum. Taking different perspectives and viewing decisions through different lenses has allowed me to become more educated and informed when it comes to critical decision making. I learned that it is necessary to involve stakeholders in the development of educational policy, as giving the stakeholders a voice builds trust with the community and teachers. Attending school board meetings and being involved in the decision-making process has given me needed experience in working with others to build relationships and gain support for the good of the school and the students.
