Through my studies and professional work I have shown policy and law competency by:
Reflection:
Since I attended a private high school, I did not have much exposure if any to the policies and law that govern educational institutions. Given the culture that we live in today with social media and transmission of information almost instantaneously, this competency gave me the most angst in that I felt unprepared with the policies and common law pertaining to the accountability, responsibility, and liability of an administrator.
ED 631 was one of the two classes I felt I grew the most during the program through a new understanding of public law and its effect on educational programs and decisions. I really enjoyed reading the case studies and diving into the reasons the courts gave for their decisions from local courts and state courts to the Supreme Court. I now feel more comfortable in navigating the basic policies that govern education (i.e. Title I, Title IX, IDEA, ESSA, FERPA, etc.). I also believe there is much room to grow in this competency as I have never formally been involved in any proceedings regarding a specific policies or issues.
