1860.  August. Derbyshire Courier.- Renovation of Chesterfield Town Hall. - In taking down the old building a portion of wainscoating was found on which was written -"John Clay joiner. Wingerworth 1787". - No doubt Mr Clay was the joiner employed in the old building and the date is undoubtedly the year of its erection.

1861. March 20th. Derby Mercury Newspaper. Crown Court. William Clay age 23 Labourer pleaded guilty to stealing on the 2nd of March at Wingerworth a pewter measure, sentenced to 3 months.
