1781. Nottingham Journal Newspaper. Mr Stones of Grantham recieved a letter from Mansfield saying that his near relation Mr Clay was close to death and wished to see --
-- him. He set out the next morning but about 5pm he was found on the road about 5 miles from Mansfield breathing his last where he died,the gentleman then went to advise -- those who were expecting him in Mansfield and it was found that Mr Stones and Mr Clay had died within minutes of each other.

statement of the Gamekeeper was as follows - I was on duty with another keeper near Blidworth when we met the complainant, my companion apprehended him and whilst
holding Clay down the dog attempted to fly at him. I fired at the dog twice but I did not kill him on the spot. - Defendant produced a gun which had the buttend almost bitten
through by the dog. - His Honour only allowed £1 as damages.
1859.Derbyshire Courier Newspaper. - William Clay licensed victualler of Mansfield applied for making a sewer along the front of his dwelling in Market Square to the present --
common sewer near the savings bank.The commissioners offered £5 towards the expense.
1861. January 3rd. Derby Mercury Newspaper. Mansfield Petty Sessions. Mary Brown sentenced to 14 days hard labour for stealing 51lbs of bread from the house of Thomas Clay at Mansfield.
1863.Jan.9th. Nottingham Guardian. Stealing iron at Mansfield. - John Clay age 43 a Fitter was charged with stealing 56 ibs of iron,7ibs of steel and 3 quarters of paint at Mansfield. The prisoner was a forgeman and allegedly stole it from his employers. Mr Sansome his employer went to him in the White Hart Yard and said "Clay you have been carrying on this game too long I must put a stop to it" He denied it and stated he had plenty of oppurtunity for getting iron from his brother who has a Smiths shop in the White Hart Yard. Edward Clay said, " I am a Smith and work for my brother Richard Clay in the White Hart Yard. I have given bits of iron to my brother John and I have seen my brother Richard sell him iron" - He was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
1864. April 15th.Court Case. - Robbery. - William Baxter and Violetta Clay "An Unfortunate" were brought forward on remand on a charge of violently assaulting William Downing at Mansfield and stealing money and items.They were drinking at the Devonshire Arms on Westgate when the landlord wished to close the pub, the female prisoner said she could take them to another pub. As they went up Meeting House Lane Downing was attacked and his pockets were rifled. Downing went to the police and accompanied PC Simons to a house on Union Street where the female prisoner was found and apprehended. She denied being involved in the robbery but a search found the items at Baxters premises. They were both committed to the Assizes.
1865.May 12th. Nottingham Guardian. Mansfield Petty Sessions. A youth named John Clay witness to a hare being shot without a licenese.
1865. June 9th. Nottingham Guardian. Game Trespass.- John Clay a labourer of Mansfield was charged with trespassing in pursuit of game on land in Mansfield. A witness saw him in the field with a dog and gun and saw him pick up the bird he had shot. He was fined £1 and 14 shillings costs.
1865. September 29th. Nottingham Guardian. Mansfield Police Court. - Felony - John Clay charged with having stolen 2 Guinea Pigs at Mansfield. - Sentenced to 14 days.
1865. Sept.29th. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper. - Auction. A parcel of land 460 square yards to the frontage of Sherwood Street. Mansfield used as a garden late in the occupation of William Clay.
1865.October 6th. Assault - Mathew Bottoms of Mansfield was charged by Violetta Clay with assaulting her on the 1st October. She was going into the Brown Cow pub on Sunday night when the defendant met her and struck her, he had met her about a fortnight ago and ill used her. He was fined 10 shillings.
1866.Sept. 21st. Nottingham Guardian. Mansfield Horticultral Show. Joseph Clay won 5 prizes.
1866. Nottingham Guardian. Robbery at Mansfield. - The sum of £40 was stolen from a drawer in the house of Mr Richard Clay. Blacksmith residing in the White Hart Yard, the theft is supposed to be his own daughter Harriet Clay age 18. It is suspected she has left town in the company of Henry Rossell from Nottingham and there is reason to suppose they will make for a seaport to leave the country. A reward of £5 has been offered for their apprehension.

1867. Nov.15th. Nottingham Guardian. Corn Exchange Concert. - Joseph Clay was in the Old Meeting House Choir.
1868. Feb.28th. Nottingham Guardian. Prisoners for trial on Tuesday next. Harriet Clay for stealing £30 the property of Richard Clay in his house at Mansfield on the 14th January and Henry Rossell age 27 .Painter.
1868. March 4th. Sheffield and Rotherham Independent. - Notts County Sessions.- Harriet Clay a handsome young woman was indicted for stealing £30 the property of Richard Clay her father at Mansfield on the 14th of January and Henry Rossell age 27 Painter was indicted for feloniously receiving,harbouring and maintaining the said Harriet Clay well knowing her to have committed the above offence. The female prisoner pleaded guilty. The case created great interest the court being crowded. The prisoner Rossell is a Painter and is married. The woman had lived with her father who is a Master Blacksmith at Mansfield. She had formed an acqaintance with him and he urged her to run away with him. She accordingly by his direction stole £30 out of a drawer in her fathers bedroom and taken the train to Nottingham and met Rossell against the Exchange Hall. He then persuaded her to go to London with him and they were afterwards apprehended there while in bed at a coffee house. When she met the prisoner at the Exchange she gave him all the money. Mr Lawrence defending endeavoured to show that the girl had formed a strong attachment for the man and that she was determined to throw herself upon him at all risks.She therefore took the money in order to make him have her. The jury found them guilty and sentenced them both to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour and one week in each three months to be spent in solitary.

1868. March. 6th. Nottingham Guardian.- Elopement and Robbery at Mansfield.- Harriet Clay age 18 was charged with stealing £30 the property of Richard Clay her father in his dwelling house at Mansfield on the 14th of January and Henry Rossell age 27. Painter was charged with feloniously receiving, harbouring and maintaining the said Harriet Clay well knowing her to have committed the above named felony. Clay pleaded guilty and Rossell not guilty. Mr Mellor for the prosecution and Mr Lawrence defended the prisoner Rossell. At the outset Mr Mellor proposed to call the female prisoner as a witness against Rossell. Richard Clay the prosecutor said he was a Blacksmith residing in Mansfield, his daughter had always lived with him except on one occasion when she was out at service for a short time. In his trade he was obliged to have money by him and he always kept it in a small "Lady`s Companion" in the bedroom, his daughter was aware of that. On Monday the 13th of January she left her home and was not seen again by her parents until the following Tuesday evening. After that she was again missed and the next time he saw her was at Mansfield Police Station. On the money bag being examined it was found to be empty the amount in question having been abstracted. - Mr Mellor then called the prisoner Harriet Clay who stated that on Monday the 13th she went to Nottingham and stayed the night with Rossell at an eating house on Derby Road. They went to a public house and seated themselves in a small room and Rossell then asked her if she had any money, she replied that she knew where her mother kept the money upon which Rossell enquired where and she told him. He asked her if she could get it and she said she had a key of the drawer.
He told her to try and get the money if her mother went out and then take the train for Nottingham and meet him at the Exchange Hall where he would be on the lookout for her. She went home between eleven and twelve o`clock next morning and upon arriving there did some work about the house. After getting tea ready she procured the keys, undid the drawer and took out the money. She then walked to Sutton and took the train for Radford. She met Rossell at the Exchange and he asked her if she had got the money, she replied in the affirmative and he took it out of the "Lady`s Companion" and tried to count it but it being dark he was unable to do so. He put the money in his pocket and then went accross the market up a yard where he counted it and informed her that there was about £30. He said they should go to London that night and they went to the Great Northern Railway Station and took tickets for Grantham where they alighted and stayed together all night at a boarding house. On the following day (Wednesday) they went to London where they took lodgings in a coffee house. A London policeman came to the house and after he had gone Rossell bought a new purse in which he put the money and handed it to her telling her to say that he never had it. She knew the prisoner six or seven weeks and had been on intimate terms with him, he said he should marry her, she did not know he was a married man. William Mettam a cattle dealer of Mansfield her uncle said that he went with Superintendent Horne in search of the prisoners, they traced them to London and having obtained the assistance of a Metropolitan police officer they succeeded in finding where the prisoners were staying. Rossell came down stairs first and Clay afterwards, the prisoners were apprehended and conveyed to the Metropoliton police station where they were searched and £28-12s was found on the female prisoner. Rossell said he was sorry for what he had done, he also said that when she gave him the money she said it was her own and he was not aware the money had been stolen. Mr Lawrence addressed the jury and pointed out that the prisoner Clay might have given her evidence in the manner she had in the hope of obtaining some mitigation of her sentence and concluded that Rossell had not acted criminally in the matter although he might have made a fool of himself with the woman. - The prosecuters lawyer said he had been requested by the father and mother of the girl to ask the court to deal leniently with her. His Lordship, in sentencing the female prisoner remarked upon the serious nature of the offence, she had not only stolen her fathers money, but had gone off with the man for an improper and immoral purpose. The sentence of the Court was that of hard labour for 12 months and one week in each three months solitary confinement and in Rossells case he would receive the same sentece as the female.

Joseph Clay versus John and William Clay.- A claim for £1-15-10d for ale.-they were in a partnership at the colliery and were to supply workmen with 1 quart of ale each to work late John paid his share but William said he had not agreed to it and the partnership is in dispute.- case ajourned until the next court day.
1868. Nov.6th. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper.- Mansfield Petty Sessions. George Clay. Framework Knitter of Mansfield was charged with using snares for taking game. Fined £2.
1869. April 23rd. Nottingham Guardian. Mansfield Petty Sessions. A young urchin named George Williamson was charged with stealing several horse shoes from the shop of John Clay. Blacksmith. Mansfield who had repeatedly missed shoes. In answer to the charge prisoner said "I did steal them" - Ordered to receive 6 strokes with a birch rod.
1869. May 5th. Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald Newspaper.- Ale House Offence.- William Clay Landlord of the Crown and Anchor Inn. Mansfield was charged with allowing his house to be open for the sale of ale at improper hours on Sunday morning 23rd April. Defendant admitted the offence and was fined 10 shillings including costs.
1869. May 7th. Derby Mercury Newspaper.Mansfield Petty Sessions.Thomas Clay of Mansfield charged with having trespassed in search of game on land - First offence so only fined 13 shillings costs.

Mansfield Serious Accident. - On Sunday evening last an accident of a most serious character occurred to a young girl named Clay the daughter of Benjamin Clay Frame Work Knitter of Belvedere Street. Mansfield. It appears the unfortunate girl between 6 and 7 o`clock on Sunday evening entered a grass field near to her fathers house to gather a few buttercups and whilst thus employed the occupant of the field a man named Frost came into the field and shouted to the girl at the same time throwing a good size stone at her which however missed her, being alarmed the poor girl endeavoured to make her escape over the wall of the field and in doing so fell into a deep excavation made for the railway company. In falling her head came in contact with the ironwork of a tip waggon driving in a portion of the bone of the skull making an orifice large enough for the insertion of a finger. Surgeons were speedily in attendance and did what they could but the girl has remained in an unconscious state ever since the occurrence and little hopes are entertained for her recovery.

1872. December 21st. Sheffield Daily Telegraph. An Unruly Apprentice. - John Clay of Mansfield moulder was charged with leaving the service of his employers Messrs Sansom Bros. Ironfounders. The case appeared to be a very aggravated one and the defendant was fined £3 and his indentures were cancelled.
1874. April 3rd. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper.- Mansfield Petty Sessions. George Clay and John Cross were summoned for committing a game trespass at Blidworth. Complainent said he saw the two defendents running a rabbit. Fined £1 and costs.

1877. June 1st. Nottingham Journal Newspaper. - Mansfield Petty Sessions. George Clay was charged with being in possession of game on the 13th inst at Mansfield Woodhouse. PC. Reynolds said he was on the High Road and saw the defendent whose clothes looked somewhat bulky and on searching Clay found a hare and pheasant in his pockets. Clay alleged he had bought the pheasants and hare giving 4 shillings for them. Clay who had been previously convicted was fined £3 and costs.
1878. Nov. 6th. William Moss of Mansfield wrote in his diary -"A poor woman named Coleman went to seek her husband and found him drinking in the Black Horse she asked him to come home and not spend money there as the family were starving having no food or coal and she would not leave without him when Edward Clay the landlord came and put her out and shut the door in her face. She later took out a summons against Clay for assaulting her and Clay was fined 10 shillings". (Ref. Old Mansfield Society).
1879. Feb.19th. William Moss of Mansfield wrote in his diary - "Died this morning Emma wife of Alick Hill aged 38. Poor Emma was the daughter of William Clay who formely kept the Crown and Anchor and who was killed at the crossing at the railway station a few months ago, she leave several little ones". (Ref.- Old Mansfield Society Publication).
1879. June 10th. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper. - Mansfield Petty Sessions. George Clay was charged with using a dog in the parish of Warsop for the purpose of killing game, he sent the dog after a hare. Fined £5.
1879. July18th. Nottingham Guardian. John Clay labourer of Mansfield was convicted of using profane language in Westgate. Fine10s-6d.
1879. Nov.28th. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper.- Mansfield Petty Sessions. George Clay was charged with committing an assault on Christopher Shacklock in the Crown and Anchor pub after being asked to desist in using obscene language. Fined £1.
1880. March. Mansfield Reporter Newspaper. Arthur Clay was charged with stealing 3 hen eggs from the stackyard at the Reindeer Inn where the landlord kept fowls. PC Nash apprehended him and found the eggs in his pocket and he said he found them in the hedge bottom and picked them up thinking he had as much right to them as anyone else. The judge said he did not believe he intended to steal the eggs so he was discharged.

1881. July 1st. Nottingham Guardian. Early on Monday morning Richard Clay. Blacksmith age 64. living in Clarkson Street. Mansfield attempted to committ suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. Clay had been in a depressed state for some time past. Doctors were called in and said that Clay will recover since the wound is not very deep.

Alleged Rape at Mansfield. - George William Clay age 17 labourer was charged with committing a rape upon Maria Barnes an elderly married woman on the highway at Mansfield Woodhouse on 27th August last. He pleaded not guilty. In her evidence she stated she was taken ill on the road and the prisoner tended assistance and after helping her part of the way home committed the crime. In defence it was alleged that she was drunk, his Lordship said there was discrepancy in her evidence. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

1904. April 18th. Nottingham Evening Post. Mansfield Girls Sad Death. - Jane Clay age 16 residing with her parents at Curriers Alley. Mansfield was found drowned in Mansfield reservoir on Sunday evening. Jane Clay wife of George William Clay gave evidence of identification, her daughter kept late hours and sometimes took to drink etc, etc. Verdict suicide.

Nottingham Evening Post.- Mansfield Publicans in Court.- An action brought by Walter John Clay retired publican of West Hill Lane for recovery of £2-10s from Edward Kelly publican of Mansfield. Dispute was over the rent of a field from Clay for Buffaloe Bills Wild West Show in Mansfield last June.

The deceased`s daughter Ethel Clay of 2 Commercial Yard said that on receiving a message that her mother wanted her she found her sitting in a chair suffering from burns and scalds, it transpired that while she was cleaning the hearth she upset a kettle of boiling water.

1954. May 19th. Guardian Journal. Mr Samuel Clay licensee of the "Pheasant Inn" for over 30 years before retiring in 1946 has died at his home 77 Hillsway Crescent, he was 72. Mr Clay lived at the Inn from the age of 12 and took over the tenancy from his father, he leaves a widow and 2 daughters.
