1918. September. Derbyshire Courier. Mrs George Clay of South Street.South Normanton has received a letter in which news is conveyed of the death of her husband Private George Clay. He was killed instantly on the 5th August by an enemy shell. Private Clay enlisted in 1915, he was a hard working miner at B. Winning Colliery, popular and quiet, the loss has come as a blow to his wife and 3 children. He served 12 months in Egypt and over 2 years in France having a splendid record.

1934. Jan.5th. Belper News.- Boy Cyclist Injured.- Jack Clay of South Normanton a scholar of Swanwick Secondry School was cycling home between Swanwick and Alfreton when he was struck by a car and thrown over the handlebars. He sustained abrasions and minor injuries. The car driver was fined at court.
