The register goes from 1622 to 1623 (then there is a gap in the register until 1653).

The early register was destroyed by Parliamentary troops in 1646 during the Civil War.

1558. September 15th. Raph Clay witness to Inventory of Thomas Bunting, yeoman of Ashover he owes 2 shillings to John Clay. (Staffordshire Record Office).

1575. April 12th. Thomas Clay owes 2 shillings and sixpence in the Will of Henry Norman of Ashover. (Staffordshire Record Office).

1617. Will of Richard Norman of Ashover.- John Clay owes £1-16-7d. (Staffordshire Record Office).

1632. John Clay to take possession of Ashover lands. (Letter of Attorney from Chesterfield Corporation) History of Chesterfield. (P. Riden).

1632. John Clay of Chesterfield. Yeoman is to deliver a lease of a messuage in Ashover to William Heathcote of Chesterfield in the occupation of Alice and Christopher Bower. (Pashley C.21).

1633. Francis Clay gentleman of Ashover. “List of Freeholders”  (DAJ Vol.6).

1635. John Clay of Chesterfield. Tanner inherits lands and tenements in Ashover from his brother Francis Clay of Higham in Shirland parish. Will - their parents were Kniveton and Margaret Clay of 

Higham, their children were John, Francis, Isobell and Joan. (brother to Kniveton is John Clay of Tupton).

1638. Derbyshire Muster Roll. - Raphe Clay of Ashover. (TNA Ref.- SP16. 405).

1641. Protestation Oath Roll. No Clays listed at Ashover.

1657. Hugh son of Francis Clay of Ashover married Mary Cantrell at Bakewell Church.

1688. Will of Hugh Clay of Ashover. Husbandman sons Francis, Arthur, Jacob, daughters Jane and Elizabeth. (Staffordshire Record Office).

1709. Francis Clay of Hill in Northwingfield parish his Will states that he has messuages and lands in Ashover parish. (Staffordshire Record Office).

1716. Thomas supposed son of Thomas Clay of Heanor by Patience Hollingsworth is baptised at Ashover February 24th.

1722. Settlement Certificate. Francis Clay webster from Ashover to Clowne. (SC21).

1726. Settlement Certificate. Francis Clay, William Clay his son and his wife and child. Ashover to Bolsover. (Ref.- Derbyshire Record Office).

1731.----- Clay daughter of Mary Hopkinson supposed by Joseph Clay of Wingerworth baptised at Ashover Sept.12th. (Parish Register).

1785. Horse Tax. Francis Clay of Ashover taxed. (Derbyshire Record Office Ref.- 1700Z/Z1).

1850. Oct. 23rd. Derby Mercury Newspaper. George Gratton of Alton imprisoned for 4 months for assaulting John Clay of Ashover.

1867. May 1st. Derby Mercury Newspaper. Titus Clay and William Clay labourers of Alton in Ashover parish were charged by Sergeant Fern with being drunk and riotous and refusing to to quit the Sun 

Inn at Clay Cross. Titus being an old offender was fined  10 shillings and  costs and William Clay fined 5 shillings and costs.

1868. May 13th. Alfreton Petty Sessions. Thomas Clay of Alton in the parish of Ashover was charged by Constable Thorpe with being drunk and riotous on the 25th and was fined 5 shillings and 10s-6d costs.

1868. Sept.12th. Derbyshire Courier. Chesterfield Police Court.- Titus Clay of Ashover labourer was charged with having unlawfully appropriated to his own use one dress and 19 boxes of matches value 

17 shillings the property of Elizabeth Sanson. On Saturday  evening she was in the Crown and Cushion Inn at Chesterfield and as she wanted to go into town she asked the prisoner if he would look 

after her bundle. He stated he would but when she got back he coolly stated he had sold the lot. The case was adjourned until  Saturday next.

1870. Will of John Clay of Alton. Ashover. Farmer, proved by Mary Clay of Alton his widow. (Derbyshire Record Office. Ref.- D96/1/13 p721).

1876. Derby Mercury Newspaper. Petty Sessions. William Clay of Alton a powerful young man assaulted Robert Saxton of North Wingfield at the Queens Head Inn, struck him a violent blow in the face. 

Fined £1 and £1-50 costs.

1881 Census Ecclesall. Sheffield. Titus Clay age 40 Lodger. General Labourer. Born Wingfield living with Ann Leather age 44 Widow.

1886. April 6th. Derbyshire Courier newspaper. - Chesterfield Court - Titus Clay of Ashover was charged with being drunk and riotous on Low Pavement. He had previously been convicted and was fined 

10 shillings and costs.

1887. July 9th. Derbyshire Courier. William Clay of Alton. Ashover was charged at the Petty Sessions with allowing 4 horses and 1 foal to stray on the highway at Ashover. - Fined - £1-1s - 6d.
