Thesis Files

Here is a dropbox link to my folder containing the files that one would need in order to compile a dissertation from The University of Iowa in 2013.

Alternatively, you can download all of the files together down at the bottom I have added a .zip file with everything in the folder in it. You will need to click the download arrow on the far right of the page down there to actually download the .zip file.

I was having trouble with some spacing issues in the Table of Contents that the class file generated. I was not able to fix it in the class file, but found something of a workaround that was suggested by Robert Niedzialomski. Not exactly ideal, but it got it accepted. Hopefully this helps you all.

Steps to manually modify the spacing and formatting of the Table of Contents file.

  1. Compile the thesis.tex file.
  2. This will generate a .toc file called thesis.toc
  3. You can open this with notepad or any basic text editor.
  4. Make the changes you need there for instance adding in a line of space (or taking it out). I don't remember now what the problem was.
  5. Save over the old thesis.toc file.
  6. Now the next time you compile the thesis, it will use this modified .toc file that you just saved.
  7. The problem is that compiling it again generates a new thesis.toc file that saves over the one that you modified.
  8. If you compile it a second time, it will have reverted back to the one that was problematic.
  9. This means if you need to keep compiling you will need to restart at step 3.
