Content-85%:
Expectations:
Each project should be rigorous in content and design, and appropriate for the designated audience. Clear and coherent language should be used. Possible Projects:
Brochure:
In your group, create a brochure for somebody trying to choose a credit card. Make sure to explain different things to consider when attempting obtaining a credit card, and possible implications of owning a credit card and the importance of a good credit score. Include any information that you feel is relevant or important to know when choosing a card. Make sure to include statistics and explanations of important policies concerning credit and debt. Information on how to get out of debt would also be useful in the brochure. The brochure should be easy to understand and presented in an attractive yet informative format. You will present the brochure and it will be evaluated by readers.
Video:
In your group, you are to create a public service announcement video to educate others about the dangers of debt and the policies that credit card companies engage in to lure in potential consumers. You should also focus on what aspects of life can lead to debt, and tips and techniques of how to get out of debt. Make sure to include explanations of important policies concerning credit and debt. The video should be no longer than five minutes, but should be clear in its message and content. Viewers of your video will have the opportunity to evaluate the video.
Lesson Plan:
Design a lesson plan for a younger group of students (preferably at the middle school or early high school level). Include in the lesson plan activities that may engage or interest the students in credit and debt. The goal of the lesson should be to lead to an increased understanding in the policies that may directly affect them and the importance of staying financially safe. Material such as a slideshow, videos, props, etc. should be used during the lesson. The students to whom the lesson is presented will have the opportunity to evaluate your lesson.
Other:
The projects listed above are just potential ideas. If you have something different, fun, and creative, ask me about it and we’ll work together to make it into your unit project.
Writing Segment:
Each project will also have a written reflection of the project. It should be no longer than two pages double spaced. In the reflection make sure to include: (1) an outline of your project, including the intended audience, (2) an explanation of why your project is important, (3) what you could have included or improve in the project if you had more time/resources, (4) an assessment of what worked and didn’t work in the project based on the evaluations from the audience
This project can be used at the end of a unit outlining credit cards and consumer debt. I gave students the choice of how to present their information in recognizing that their project would be used as a valuable resource to educate others about the dangers of debt. This has the ability to empower their own knowledge and makes the assessment meaningful.
Introduction:
Throughout the last week, you’ve had the opportunity to learn about credit and debt from a variety of sources, ranging from advertisements to articles to guest speakers. You understand how credit card companies approach the consumer, and how dangerous debt can be. We’ve even discussed government policies and what sort of impacts lack of regulation can have.
Now it’s your turn to teach somebody else what you think is important to know about credit and debt. You have choices of a few different projects to work on. You will work on the projects in groups of 3 with a specific audience in mind. Upon completion, we will work together to find an audience for your project and you’ll have the opportunity to empower and educate your audience.
