Below you will find links to a fieldwork research presentation about the Mexican American community in East Harlem, New York, as well as a four-week ELA and social studies unit of study based on this community. This work is not only of general interest, but it also outlines and details how educators can capture and use the everyday resources within any community to more fully establish a study of various aspects that shape and drive such subject matters. These unit lessons specifically stem from learners' own assumptions and points of interest, further guided by a sequence of discussion prompts and assigned activities, to allow for more fully developed and researched opinions and responses based on evidence, composed of primary and secondary sources. In this process, lessons make full use of discourse, writing, video and reading presentations, finished off by an art component as an expression and extension of a community's past and present history in the making.
In closing, it was very interesting to engage this fellow Latino community as I explored the cultural assets, realia, history and characteristics that make this group one of the most spirited and fastest-growing bilingual populations in the United States. Hope you enjoy this journey as much as I did..
