Breathing...
It is often stated in yogic philosophy that "the mind follows the body and the body follows the breath."
When it's flowing easily, we tend to not pay it much mind. It "breathes us" and we go about of lives. When it's shallow, strained or sensitive to environmental conditions or internal states, it can limit our capacity to pay much mind to anything else. The links between our breath, nervous system, emotional life, energetic body, environment and personal history are varied and rich.
Have you ever much wondered how your chronic health issues and even limitations in relationships, work and creative life might be related to your breath or lack thereof? Your curiosity combined with your courage are a powerful combination when it comes to exploring this ground, and the benefits of your exploration will delight and surprise you.
......
I support you in working through what is refered to as your "Inherent Treatment Plan" in Biodynamic Cranial Sacral therapy speak, using any combination of cranial sacral methods, somatic processing techniques, soft tissue-based bodywork, movement practices such as yoga and chi gong,, "parts work" via IFS therapy, vocal toning & sounding, as well as other embodiment "springboards" depending on your dynamic needs in order to explore the sometimes rugged landscape of breath and breathing.
Oftentimes, simply coming into curiosity and self-compassion allows for more awareness of these patterns that in and of itself can create changes. Once we feel safe and supported, sessions can provide the gateway to unwinding restriction patterns throughout the rest of the mind-body-spirit-emotion matrix. We do this a little bit at a time, in a slow and connected way - a little bit of increased awareness and safety mixed with a bit more self-compassion goes a very long way!
My therapeutic practices are informed in part by an awareness of and an homage to the wisdom teachings of the Five Elements Theory. This theory, which is rooted in ancient Shamanic Taoism, has morphed into what many are now practicing as Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves working with an awareness of the meridians. These are often thought of as the "energy pathways" of the body, which we now know are actually filled with a fluid substance that is very similar to that of the cranial sacral fluid that bathes our brains and spinal columns. I help you track these pathways and their varying patterns of flow and restriction through the soft tissue layers in a hands-on bodywork session. This very old approach to the meridians, organs and elements is deeply attuned to the way that our emotions are impacting our anatomy and physiology - and therefore our behaviors and capacity, by extension. It can be very illuminating and empowering to begin to feel these patterns for yourself, to remember that you are comprised of these very elements of Earth, Fire, Wood, Water and Metal (mineral) and to gain simple and effective tools for regulating your own system over time.
I love the process of working with clients on what are known as "organ sounds" and other vocal, breath and visualization methods so that you have a way of becoming more self-aware and empowered, both inside and outside of the session. I help you connect to and practice tools for becoming a safer person for yourself - someone who knows how to help yourself be calm and more alive.
The process of vocal toning (moving sounds/vibrations through the mouth, nose and face) gives the client a lot of good feedback from their system about what is happening inside of the body and can help to build a sense of connection to the Self as well as help to "find one's voice." (see article links on the Polyvagal Theory and vagal toning, coming soon...)
I incorporate various body-mind as well as spiritual perspectives and techniques to help clients gain a more holistic, inspired and empowered view on the many aspects of breath.
I also provide support to explore arenas of impact related to:
environment
nutrition and possible food triggers
an awareness of structural integration: a soft tissue approach to looking at posture, gait and movement
birth, embryology, conception and early childhood impacts
dental history, dental issues and their potential impacts on breath and health
medical history
trauma history (our own and that of over-culture and/or our lineage burdens/ancestral trauma)
the workings and state of the neurohormonal system
providing trusted referrals when needed; I work closely with integrative medicine geniuses across modalities
