Most people who have ventured to the village of Barthomley, in South Cheshire, either to visit the ancient Church of St Bertoline’s, and/or the historic ‘White Lion’ Public House, will know that is an old, quaint and picturesque Cheshire village.

It has numerous examples of black and white timber framed houses, and historic farms dotted around the narrow and winding lanes, and gives anyone driving through, the sense of how Cheshire existed in the past.

However, many of those who have visited the Church or the ‘White Lion’, won’t realise without studying the information in the church or pub, that there was also another Public House, almost opposite the ‘White Lion’ called the ‘Punchbowl’ or ‘The Steps’. Others will also not realise that there were a number of schools within the village, and most won’t have visited the village well, just over the bridge from the pub.

As well as that, most won’t know, even villagers, that there was a lost medieval chapel, as well as the medieval church, situated in the village.

Most still, won’t know the history of the occupants of the two public houses, and won’t know that there were other pubs in Barthomley, one just over the bridge from the ‘White Lion’, albeit only a pub for a short time.

However, many will have heard about the infamous ‘Barthomley Massacre’ which took place at Christmas 1643, in and around the church, during the 17th century English Civil War.

This history booklet, written by local historian, Charles E. S. Fairey, who lives nearby, in Weston, brings together the story of the two pubs, as well as information about the others. It gives us a detailed account of the occupants of both, as well as information upon their history and architecture.

It also examines the history of the lost medieval chapel, which was situated in the village, which was a Knights Hospitaller Chapel, as well as associated Hospitaller history in Cheshire, and another lost Chapel of theirs, near Middlewich.

It also gives a brief history of the locality, including information upon St Bertoline, the Church, the Old Rectory, the old schools, and the village well.

Inside this booklet, you will also find old pictures and old photographs, of the buildings examined, as well as two maps of the village, dating from 1762 and 1865, kindly supplied by The Duchy of Lancaster Archives in London.
