Nantwich for a long time has been underestimated in the Roman period. Especially because archaeological evidence of its full extent, was lacking in previous decades, to the other two ‘Wiches’ of Cheshire, i.e. Middlewich and Northwich. The former of these has had a great deal of archaeological investigation in the past decades. However in 2002 after the ‘Kingsley Fields’ archaeological dig, Nantwich is now comprehensibly back on the Roman Map.


Its Roman fort has still not been found, but possibilities where it may have been situated have been proposed. At Middlewich and Northwich their forts have been found and proved.


However, it was still lacking in stature as a Roman Settlement site, until now.

I think now, there is no argument that Nantwich was a very important settlement in the Iron Age, and then in the Roman period, and none of it can now be denied.

 Moving forward, these new attributes of the salt town, need to be embellished with further archaeological investigations and study, because now it is certainly “on the Roman Map”, name, possible Celtic goddess, and all!
