LESTER FULLER CHAFFEE, son of Herbert Fuller and Carrie Toogood Chaffee, was born in Amenia, ND, October 30, 1902; died in Amenia in 1981; married (1) February 6, 1930 in Chicago, IL, Dorothy Stephens, who died in Amenia in 1936. He married (2) in 1946, Frances Brown, daughter of William Wallace and Margaret (Schallock) Brown. She was born July 12, 1927 in Fargo, ND. This marriage terminated in divorce and he married (3) December 15, 1955 at St. Cloud, MN, Faye Osterndorff, daughter of William and Minnie Osterndorff of Omaha, NE. She was born October 31, 1925 in Craig, NE.
Lester as a boy in Amenia
Lester Chaffee had his early years of schooling at home in Amenia, ND. Following the death of his father, his mother moved to Minneapolis, and he continued his schooling at Blake School, Hopkins, MN from 1912 to 1917. He entered Hotchkiss School at Lakeville, CT in 1917 and graduated from there in 1919.

With his mother and sister, Adele, he travelled to England that fall, attended the University of London for the fall term, then toured England and the continent during the winter months, returning to his home in Amenia, ND that spring. He entered Pomona College, Claremont, CA the fall of 1920, the next year transferred to the University of Oregon at Eugene, from which he graduated in 1926. In 1927 he worked in architects' offices in San Francisco and Chicago, returning to Amenia in December 1927, where he lived until 1936. He returned to architecture work that fall, living in San Anselmo, CA until the outbreak of W.W.II at which time he moved to Seattle where he was employed in the engineering department of the Boeing Aircraft Corporation. In May 1943 he returned again to Amenia, and was looking after his farming interests there until his death in 1981.
