A man whose daughter Eben (E.W.Chaffee II) was dating gave him some advice about how to take a girl on a buggy ride. The buggies generally had a bench-style seat, consisting of a wooden plank with an elongated cushion on it. The man said the thing to do was to get two pieces of stovewood and put one under each end of the cushion. Stovewood was cut to a little over a foot long, and the pieces always had a flat side due to having been split, so they would fit neatly under the ends of the cushion and wouldn't roll around. The man explained that the stovewood would create a hollow in the middle of the cushion. Then the jouncing of the buggy would cause the girl to slide up against you.
