Our 220 gallon preformed ponds were purchased back in 2001 at Home Depot. They were made by General Foam Plastics Corp in Norfolk, Virginia. The in ground kidney shaped 75 gallon frog pond was purchased in 2002. The only part of our preforms left exposed were the flat edges. We left them exposed since it is easier to clean and work around a pond without plants on the border. We wanted ponds that would not be permanent poured in ground or any that required a liner. The preforms are sturdy and easy to maintain. They come in different shapes, sizes and depths, some with or without plant shelves. We winter over our plants and fish without any problems.
We updated our pumps, we are using Jebao now with a higher flow rate, 1200 gph. Vortex impellar. Oil free safe for fish. Vertical or horizontal mount with ability to make inline filter which we use filter pads over the cylinder filled with lava rock we made that is attached to each pump. We pull the filter sleeves off to clean periodically. We added 4 Koi in 2016. We don't over feed and they are doing well. I add water daily during the warm weather and so far we have not had any algae bloom issues. Still clear clean water.
With good water flow from our Jebao pumps, we use bamboo stalks for a higher drop to add more oxygen to the water. We keep our fish ponds clean of rotting plant/animal debris. We don't over feed our fish and they provide all the plant nutrients needed. It takes time to set up a natural pond using the proper number of fish and plants to maintain balance. Water changes are important. If we see signs of problems, dead fish for example, we remove them at once. We don't allow decaying plants or animals to foul the water. Crystal clear water with healthy fish and plants is the greatest reward for working on the ponds year round.
