The Cannon Valley Velo Club has taken part in several community events since our founding this spring. Below is a list of the events, as well as a few details about upcoming events:
Recent Community Events:
April 30, 2011: Earth Day Event at the UCC, Northfield -- We shared information about bike safety, performed bike safety checks, and discussed and helped attendees with helmet fit.
May 7, 2011: YMCA Healthy Kids Day -- Tom set up a wind trainer hooked to a computer simulation so kids could see all sorts of statistics about their own 1/2-mile ride, including the average and max. watts produced. Kids enjoyed comparing their output to the watts required to run common appliances, and those produced by elite cyclists. The bike trainer was a huge hit with the kids!
We also discussed how to stay healthy, passed out cards with Club information, and encouraged families to learn about bike safety from Share the Road MN.
June 4, 2011: Cannon Valley Trail 25th Anniversary Celebration -- we participated in "Voices of the Cannon Valley", again discussing bike safety, handing out Club cards, and discussing routes in the area (some of which include the Cannon Valley Trail). The event drew quite a large number of attendees, many of whom expressed appreciation for our Club jersey. Thanks for the design, Evan!
June 5, 2011: A small but very involved group met for the Club's first Bike Safety Clinic, during which we went over Share the Road MN's "Rules of the Road", hand signals, rider etiquette, and other aspects of riding safely on trails or roads. We're looking forward to repeating this event, perhaps in conjunction with the YMCA or another local group.
Race Team: Our race team has been busy! Here are a few of the races at which the CVVC Race Team has represented the Club:
Opus Criterium (Tuesdays April 17, 24 May 01, 08, 15, 22 -- CVVC racers have been participating in the race series, honing their team tactics and race strategy. Teamwork and solid training resulted in CVVC president Tom Bisel's first road race win recently!)
Ken Woods Road Race (April 23)
Target Memorial Day Criterium (May 29: Storms disrupted the morning races, but 4 CVVC racers took part)
State of MN Championships (where Club members Merrill Lutsky and Todd Foster took 2nd and 3rd in the Cat. 3 Time Trial -- congratulations!)

Upcoming Events: Join us for these events:
Northfield Downtown Criterium: Monday, July 4th, 2011
Part of the "Rider of the Year" series, this exciting and technical Criterium bike race draws top riders from MN and the surrounding states. This race has been run quite professionally by Milltown Cycles for the past 10 years. Details about the race can be found on this race flyer. Volunteers are always needed and well compensated for their efforts -- often getting the best seat in the house, while race organizers provide water and food throughout the day. YMCA Kids' Triathlon: Saturday, July 9th, 2011
"The 2nd Annual Y Kids Tri is a fun, non-competitive triathlon that’s all about getting kids excited to get fit! Kids ages 6-14 will experience a morning of encouragement, cheers and satisfaction of completing the swim, bike and run event. There’s nothing like the excitement of crossing a finish line!"
Event organizers are looking for participants, but also Volunteers. If you can help in any capacity (even standing at a corner to cheer and make sure the kids are safe), please sign up at the event volunteer website.
