I made this metal chain guard out of 1-1/2" aluminum angle, 1/8" and 3/32" aluminum sheet and some rivets.
It wasn't that difficult to make if you have some metalworking skills. It was necessary to narrow the 1-1/2" section starting around the lip of the rim up to the end of the angle piece moving toward the sprocket. Probably the most difficult part was getting the right geometry on the piece that mounts to the angled section of the swingarm. There is also a notch that has to be cut in the 1-1/2" aluminum angle to accomdate this mounting piece.
I basically took most of my measurements off of the OEM plastic guard. As you can see, I lengthened the guard to cover the chain up toward the front sprocket. I will post some more detailed pics next time I have it off to service the chain.
I'm pretty proud of this piece because it was made completely with basic hand tools; hacksaw, files, vise, rivet gun, sandpaper, scotch-brite.
Anybody can do this and it beats paying $100. Total cost on this for me was about $10 and a few hours of my time, doing what I love to do.
