A Troop 9 Eagle Scout candidate created two receptacles for residents in the local area to deposit unserviceable flags for dignified disposal.
One of the deposit sites is located in the Stonington Town Hall on Elm Street. It is a freestanding wooden container decorated with an American flag and is located in the entrance hall. The other site is located at the Harley P. Chase VFW Post 1265 on Route 1 in Pawcatuck. Citizens can deposit their unserviceable flags in a slot located on the left side of the front of the building.
Flags are considered unserviceable when they are worn, torn, or toiled, or when the colors are no longer vivid. Tears on the end can be re-sewn up to five to seven percent of the flag.
The flags will be collected and properly retired by Troop 9. The troop holds several retirement ceremonies throughout the year. The flags are cut into quarters, as they cease to be flags when they are cut into pieces. The blue fields with stars are left intact because the union should never be broken.
If you have an unservicable flag, please contact Troop 9.
