I think I need to have a valve replaced. Brief history:
Last week we noticed our Lawn Genie irrigation valve was vibrating, so I bought a new one. That requires cutting the white PVC pipe, so I replaced only the parts: the left (anti-siphon) side and the right side that has the solenoid and diaphragm.
After unscrewing the solenoid, a fountain of water sprayed up as in the photo below. Of course I had turned off the water source, twisting the round red knob it all the way shut. I put a bucket under and waited half an hour, but the fountain never stopped. So I guess that the red faucet is leaking.
I continued to replace the solenoid and diaphragm, all went well and now it’s not leaking and it appears to work. So nothing super urgent here.
But what's going on with that red faucet? I think it needs to be replaced. One side screws on to a brass fitting (3/4?) and the other to white PVC. Is this little segment something easy to find at Ace or similar? As I recall, you did the welding on the metal pipe so you've been there. Would I be able to do it simply with chanellock or other wrench, or would it involve cutting and gluing PVC? I hope no welding of the metal is necessary.
I’d like to replace it with a quarter turn ball valve. I guess metal/brass is better than PVC. I don’t want to go breaking PVC pipe, so if it involves cutting and gluing pipe, please let me know and I’d like to ask you to do it.
If it does involve cutting the white PVC pipe, I'd like to request you replace both whole Lawn Genie irrigation valves because, if the one in the foreground went bad, the one in the background is likely to go bad soon too.
