CELL NOTES
Robert Hooke – scientist who discovered cells
Cell theory
all organisms made of one or more cells
cells are the basic unit of life
all cells come from pre-existing cells
cytoplasm – jelly-like substance found inside of cells
Two types of cells
Eukaryotic – has a membrane around cell (plant and animal)
Prokaryotic – does not have a membrane around cell (bacteria)
Every cell has a certain job to do
Cell membrane – double layer of fat and protein surrounding cell, made of cholesterol
Organelles – parts of a cell that perform certain functions within the cell
nucleus – brain of the cell, control center
chromatin – DNA, genetic blueprints
endoplasmic reticulum – highway system, moves material around cell
protein – needed for chemical reactions
ribosomes – make proteins, found on ER
golgi bodies – moves material to outside of cell
mitochondria – where food converted to energy, power plant of cell
lysosome – digest waste
vacuoles – energy storage areas
Cell wall – found only in plant cells, supports and protects cell, made of cellulose(sugar)
Chloroplast – in plants, convert light energy into chemical energy
Organization of organiasm
collection of cells working together form tissues
collection of tissue working together form organs
organs working together form systems
systems working together form organisms
