我的管见写在下面，请教諸君。

田校长1957在Kentucky University of Louisville有不愉快经验：

老教授叫他Chinaman。
有一次在公共汽车上，不知道自己要坐前排或后排。

这岐视可以㱕于历史遣毒，南部民智未开。田校长也承认：“总的来说，南部的人实际上对外国人，对客人还是很热情，很好的”。

再看田校长在南部得到什么？

全额奖学金，管吃管住，每月还有$20寄回台湾。
硕士学位，顺利转学到Princeton攻博士。

学业完成后，田校长到UC Berkeley任職，53岁在250个候选人中，做到Chancellor。我当然没有田校长的聪明才智，假如有，我倒希望发生在田校长身上的“歧视与猜忌”，也发生在我身上。

过去一年美国疯狂反华，黄面孔的我当然气憤，但也有一絲骄傲。当年担心的岐視，是害怕被错认为二等公民。现在的反华，是美国害怕中国崛起，自己变为老二。

两虎相斗必有一伤，我希望中美能冷静处理当前争议，共同创造繁荣。八国联军的事，我再也不会提起，历史的帐哪里算得清楚？现在在街上，我头抬得高高，口袋里有现鈔$50，有人来抢，我双手奉上，就算打发叫花子。

唯一考虑的是，游民的眼睛是雪亮的，以后這50大元，要是放美金，还是放人民币？

日前谈起袁大头，我在百度查看，現值每枚大約美金佰元。

当年我追梅生，她台大我成大，高攀了。前两个月才知道梅生母亲是镶黄旗，八旗之首。假如遜清尚在，梅生也許是蒙古鄂尓多斯左翼郡王的福晋，哪里像现在可憐巴巴，大白天到中国城买菜吃饭，也怕人抢？另外一个惊喜，梅生母亲留给她袁大头伍十多枚。当今美国经济脆弱，可能到来的是：通货膨胀股市崩盘，屈時我们生活保障就是这批袁大头。

我把袁大頭埋在枕頭下，每晚數一遍。有一天袁大头变比特币，，希望无穷，我的高攀越来越高了。

盛名之累自古以然，但普通老百姓的小名也可能有麻烦。

1962我从台湾到美国，我的英文名字是：

Shung-Wu Lee

不知道是哪位洋泾浜的发明，这記号hyphen“-”决不可少，没有它就是翻译不正确，老美不认得你，領事館不簽證。

这小小記号就成我麻烦之源，从此我的英文名字有七八种不同的写法，有没有 hyphen？ Shungwu是一字或两字? First name, second name, 大写小写，加上我的 nick name “Andy”凑热闹。每次看到“个资外泄”的新闻，我一点也不担心，因为我自己也不容易找到网上的我。

自1990年互联网盛行，姓名不能有记号。我名字统一为

Shungwu Lee

但问题没有解决，我以前的老文件：社会安全卡，医疗保险，台湾护照，银行存款，遣嘱沒有這個新名字。

現在人生走到最後一程，有些事必须办妥。我一股票帳户有50年歴史，前几天因密码出错，我要在电话上recover，我无法说出当年开戶時的正确姓名。可恨对方服务员是印度人，我的江西英文和他言语不通，导致中印在电话上交战了一个多小时。

各位老友，我希望你们没有我这种麻烦。

有统计：一个人一生接触的人物，用的东西，大约有2万件，包括父母朋友，电视衣服，手表护照等。人生走到最后，这张单子减到50，其他的可以丢掉，送救世军，不影响生活，這是我的好友陳領導說的。這半百清單上，什么是头三？我的答案是：

药箱，老伴，手机。

假如我搬家，一部脚踏车搞定。药箱夹在后面弹簧，老伴横坐前面杠子。十年前我坚持不用手机，现在晚上起来例行方便，手机不离手。因为在“痴痴的等”时，可以查看最新天气和股市预测。

老伴看到我的清单不高兴，怎么她名列第二？

我是不敢多嘴，其实最新研究的名单，上面只有一项：就是银行密码。有了它，那様东西不可以换新？

过去两年，每次在Henderson爬山，北望14哩外的Vegas Strip，我們很想辨别那远远的大建筑。一直到今天完成了上面这张照片。

这样的照片有什么用？当然没有用，只是我們在本地住了四年，希望把自己的环境搞清楚。

Vegas Strip is about 14 miles away in the direction of West 30 degrees of the North or 330NW, and at a height 3066 feet. In the figure below, the camera photo plane is the double black lines. Because of such an oblique view angle, relative positions of buildings may look a bit unfamiliar.

The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and nature trips and is best used from September until May. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

最近电视剧大决战熱播，其主题歌“寸心”动听，主唱王力宏，谭维维是一時之选。我音乐外行，但对此歌有点意见。

先说题外话。邓丽君唱“路边的野花不要采”是绝配。听众边听边想，家花如此甜美，何必在外面找麻烦？所以歌是誰唱的，很有關係。

“寸心”歌咏农民战士，棉衣布鞋在战壕中啃窝窝头。号声起，他们向前冲，迎面是敌人的机枪子弹。这歌的主唱是锦衣玉食的ABC，他能唱出感情？震动听众吗？

我友人楊振来是华侨，“大决战”过去没有几年，他在台湾上大学，国共内战他是有身感的。杨兄业余喜欢唱歌，家庭式的K歌和中央电视台不在同一层次，但杨兄唱的寸心有特殊味道。最后一段，他的高音动听流畅。

今天继续看Google地图，昨天誤把张飞当岳飛。成大图书馆是近年新建，1960我们引以为傲的老图书馆已改名为“未来馆”。

非常幸运我找到一张老地图，上面的校园我们熟悉。六十年的宿舍当然已经撤除，但在这图上，我找住过的12宿舍，游泳池等。

當年九條飢漢遊地有兩個可能：

我在地圖上查了一下，B在台南和嘉義之間，從成大到B車程35分鐘。那個時候飯都吃不飽，誰有自用小汽車？所以飢漢照片我猜是發生在碧潭，1961年六七月間，同學們已經畢業正準備出國。可欣慰的是60年後，飢漢們，不論在不在照片上，不論在台灣美國，都創出一番天地。

最後說一句內心話，朋友來朋友去，可靠的，沒有利害關係的還是老同學。我現在“80不下床”，對一切看淡，甚至冷漠。但想到兆樹元生聖英，花了這麼多力氣辦同學會，還不是珍惜當年同窗四年的緣分？

我再冷漠，這星期六的ZOOM一定參加！

我不赞成李雄武的80不下床. 我们这个年纪如果还能走就应该多多的利用它, 等到真的不能走的时候再不下床也不迟. 我们只要尽人事(打三針防疫针) 而听天命, 该吃的时候吃,该玩的时候玩, 何必把仅有的歳月限制在家里.

As I mentioned during the Zoom meeting, I would have not been able to come to the US without 張禹's advice on which school to apply for the best financial support. With his advice, I applied for UNM. Sure enough, the financial support I received from UNM not only allow me to cover all the expenses while attending school there but also save enough to pay back the airplane ticket cost I borrowed and to buy a used car to facilitate dating Lena, now my wife, who then ordered me to transfer to another school for a follow up degree. Indirectly I owe 張禹 a great deal.

Also while receiving his advice, I got to eat lunches often at 張禹 auntie's house. I still remember there was always chicken soup at every meal.

諸位記得汪寧清？成電比我們高一年。當年他和武修同在 University of New Mexico(UNM)，一學期後汪轉學到Georgia Tech，他向武修炫耀：

“新疆大學不如上海工專”

還有Lena爸爸開出嫁女的條件:

不要車不要房，

只要姑爺名校再拋光。

Lena拿出私房買了一部車，小兩口子甜甜蜜蜜開車到Berkeley。

到今天我才知道這，新疆大學是張禹介紹的。

離開新疆大學是武修的生命轉淚點，

進入新疆大學是他幸福一生的開始。

I graduated from Georgia Tech, Thanks 雄武, you call it 上海工專. It is not MIT or Harvard! But since I am not as talented as 武修, I am OK with what I can! But the way, I married a 上海 girl, it is a bonus for my life! We have three kids, my daughter is principal of Montgomery County, MD school, she supervised the building of three brand new school from the ground up! Our county School Superintendent thanked me for a good daughter! During my own career, I was never praised by any of my boss! That show how talented I am!

Lily remined me, that I also have two sons, they both working in the Advertising/mass communication area, I don't have that talent either, that is a big surprise for me! I hope they can use the talent to promote US and China relation and understanding!

I strongly disagree with your statement, "I am not as talented as 武修". Talents are multidimensional. It may be that my logical skill is not bad. But you are good in sports, while I am terrible; you are meticulous while I am always careless; you are good in memory while I am very forgetful. Oh, yes, you seem also to be more skillful in dealing with girls! Overall, you are more talented than I am. I feel lucky that through all the years you have considered me as a good friend of yours.

I have always openly claimed that Lena, my wife, is more talented than I am. Yes, I am more logical; but she has excellent language skills and human skills. One to two!

汪寧清 never attended Georgia Tech. He received MS from the University of New Mexico and Ph.D. from Stanford. He is very proud of UNM.

What a coincidence. According to New York Times today, the most highly vaccinated large county in America is Montgomery County, MD at 93%. 威國, isn't your daughter a school principal there? She must have done a wonderful job with kids.

This brings me to an article written by 武修 three years ago. He wrote

60年前的老同學們好，

很高興能與李雄武聨絡上，又從他那裡得知各位老同學的信息，我們住在康州的Waterford 小村，有兩位年輕的隣居（陳天才，夫人梁玉凭亦成大校友）退休后搬到 Las Vegas 與李雄武做成新隣居，我以前在匹茲堡Westinghouse R&D，後來康州General Dynamics 工作，業餘在附近的康州大學Avery Point 分校教課，因為校園濱海風景宜人，吸引着我不知不覺已有二十餘年,Waterford 地方小靠近海邊，不經名傳，或許老同學們聼過Foxwoods Casino,或者Mystic Pizza (Julia Robert 主角電影），地點就在附近，如果老同學來新英格蘭旅遊渡假，或許我們可以在這邊較為平靜的海邊見見面，散散步，聊聊天，吃吃新英格藺的海鮮，敘述60年前的往事.....

面對目前新冠病毒漫延，願我們互相保重，在綱上遙祝老同學新年快樂，身體健康。

家政：

想不到你认识这么多电机同学，我也有些零星记忆关于机械系。

1。曹兄说当年教我们热工學的是“馬”教授，但我记得是何緒赞老先生，面孔慈祥，打分数更慈祥，David每次考试不近100，同学会感覺意外。

2。大一有两学期“工厂实习”，老师是林料总，学习木工电銲，做沙模型，这恐怕是当年台南高工留下来的课。

3。机械系教授孙方繹，1958他的“人造卫星6講”，轰动台湾。我去听过一次，场中有位校花级的女生。有同学說，她醉翁之意不在酒，孙教授是刚从美国回来的青年才俊呀。

4。胡成章教授，出书“机动学”，同学每人买一本，争先請胡老师签名。传说：他解考卷是用电风扇把考卷吹散一地，捡起来疊成堆，第一本98，分数顺次往下降。

5。当然机械系最富盛名的是張燕波教授，他被礼聘到普渡大学。儿子只身在台，帮助不少同学申请美国学校，为他人作嫁衣裳，自己只能留英。运气是挡不住的，儿子后来从英转来美国，在飞机上巧遇“北欧金发空姐”而结為夫妻，是我们同学中的佳话。

在你寄來的電訉地址上，我認識電機系同學，有的是高雄中學同學，有的是同宿舍同學，有的在啚書舘和校園活動認識，更有從機械系教授口中常常稱讚電機系的張鍾𤀹李雄武等好學生，在我的心目中認識的同學都是非常優秀，在那時我對於你們那些平常不是只有念書，而且又活力冲沛，交際廣泛，又有領導能力，著實令我欽佩不己。

你的記憶力真是好，記得那麼多機械系教授，當時機械系教授的確都非常有才華，他們不但專業精通，有的又會打網球，打彈子，我對於那些教授更是高山仰止。

1. 朱越生系主任教我們熱工學，馬承九教授熱工，可能教不同年屆的電機系。

2. 何緒贊教授我們工廠實習，他對同學很客氣，對工廠秩序要求很嚴格。

3. 孫方鐸教授是那時的太空專家，敎我們流體力學，空氣動力學，他後來也来美國到Univ of Michigan 攻讀博士,那時他已經四十多歲與我們同班同學李進修一齊選課，后來他們都去台灣清華任教。

4. 胡成章教授，出書、教授機動學，會打綱球，又會唱京戲，人很風趣,他給我寫介紹信時，把他的地址，除了台灣地址，還寫上他在東北老家的地址，他說他東北的房子非常寬闊，常常令他想念不已。

5.當時機械系名教授有：王助，張燕波，朱越生，孫方鐸，徐迺良，張象賢，胡成章，朱良璽，陳春錦，馬承九（兩年前過世，享年105嵗）等，記得莊君地教務長嗎？他教我們冶金學，都是機械系裡的大牌教授。特別值得一提的是，王助教授更是中國航天發展史上的先驅，當年他從MIT學成后去波音航空公司設計飛機，後來回到中國，是銭學森出國前的專業培訓導師，是影響錢學森一生中的重要人物之一。

再説說我對同學的記憶，

A. 在成大那時，我們晚上都常到啚書舘念書，啚書錧十一點息燈，許多同學又再到商學院教室，那裡不息燈，但是位子有限，須要早到才能有坐位，當時男生女生一大群人都在往教室走，有一次我走在你的后面，那時天很黑暗，聼你大聲說、方廷昭，要不要給你佔個位子，佔一個MIss 旁邊的位子？在那些時光裡，我也與王忡乾到不同的教室念書，我想你們大概不會記憶這些小事情。

B. 彭聖英，吳元生，李鍾𠓾都是高雄中學同學，在校園常見到，出國後就沒有聯絡。

C. 李鍾鑫也是我們入伍受訓的隊友，他站在我的後面，那時我們站姿，手要放在背後，他告訴我說我的汗從小指珠珠滴下，可是兩腿站著兩小時一直不動，是的，那時我們都有這些本領，畢業后我們也失去聯絡。

D. 大約1963-4 年冬天左右，羅雲平校長訪問哈佛，成大在波士頓的校友歡送他的時候,是在劉炯朗（那時他在MIT 任教）家裡舉行，在那裡遇到張威國，不知道張威國記不記得那次會晤。

E. 1961年畢業后，我記得在台北曾遇到過季兆樹, 方廷昭，那時大家都準備出國忙碌，沒有細聊，方兄，季兄，可能也不會記得這些。

1957我們新生訓練第一天，系主任周肇西精神訓話：

“劉炯朗畢業總平均96.3，是歷史最高，包括工學院理學院商學院政大台大中研院。”

有個學生不知輕重做了一個調查，發現教務長莊君地總平均超過97分。系主任跳腳，急得東北話出來了：

“👺扒瞎！八桿子撥拉不著！"

"🗣莊是台南高工，那時體育音樂都算總平均！”

劉一年前西去，86。假如沒有他，以他為榜樣，我這一生可能要差些。

很懷念劉炯朗。

我的腿不長！

但是我知道那不是問題所在！主要的原因，是我們這一屆，髙手太多，你，鐘䥧，武修，老季，老K，真是濟濟多士，為我們電機系争光！周主任當然高興！

我記得我在做助教時，周主任 expect 我們這些助教都應該坐在辦公室讀書，不要亂跑！他的習慣，是上午下午他都要繞系一週，走到每個辦公室㚈面，在門口大聲的點名，叫到我的名字，我要回一聲 "到"，可能他常常沒聼到我答應，所以対我不滿意，不能怪他，更不能怪我腿不長！我也是在校，但往往是到外文系去旁聽了！其實也許是去看女同學，只是不好意思跟系主任和各位老友説老實話！

以前的往事，說來也很有趣！

好高興看到你寄來的文章，很快的看了一下，想起好多往事。都不太記得曹家政，李鐘鑫彭聖英等都在成大電機系，他們都是我雄中的同學，大學後很少聯絡。吳元生也是雄中的。我會好好唸這些文章的。你大概不知道我唸了好多你和中學同學們所寫的文章（在王東原將軍腳部運動的website）。非常欣賞，篇篇精彩，你和你的同學們都太有才氣了。而且都很團結，到現在還有聯系。真不簡單。

電機系的甘如石，還有禇照亞，都是我們的雄中同學，也是是成大舍友，當年他們各自才氣橫溢，精力充沛，交遊廣泛，他們的英年早逝，是工程界的損失。

在雄武寄來的電訊上，看到李德昌同學的名字，記得在2011年回成大畢業五十週年紀念會的餐桌上，從他那裡得知機械系同學汪時慶的電信地址，現在又從你這裡得到化工系黃萬生的電信，真是高興，得助於我們兩地共同年輕隣居陳天才梁玉凭（成大化工），我們又有新篇章了，譲我們日后詳細聯繫，現在先祝賀雄武梅生，萬生同眉，新春安好。

1975 年间，常回台灣。経考試院朋友打聴,找到周主任住址。雖已知他身體不好.還是非常興奮，與他家人通話後去拜見。

進了屋，客廰有張床。他姪女在旁照顧。周主任成植物人恐已有段時間。徐眼睛似乎轉注我一眼外，全身都已失控。他獨子在美。目前只看到這位姪女照顧。嗚呼！這么有智慧的恩師，也逃不過這無情的人生關口。很難過.但,能找到並見到他一眼，我成全時時心靈上的懐念。老季

有一天周主任叫我到他辦公室,勸我講話要小心.一面勸說我，他一面眼淚掉下來。顯然他擔心我的講話不小心會影響到我的前途和出國，我非常非常的感動。（前一天我在班上講了一些話批評學校，有一位同學大概做了一個小報告。）從此之後我講話就比以前小心,對於周主任的關心我永遠難忘。

在大三時我因為開刀住院，周主任知道我的經濟情況很不好，他來看我，還給了我$200元.

他真是我的恩師!

這是來美60年，我第一次看見武修用中文通訊。非常恰當，他寫的是紀念恩師周肇西先生。

人説英文中文是通訊工具，哪一種方便用哪一種。但有一例外，當你表達內心的感情，母語更順，靠得更近。

我遇見我的兄弟姐妹，江西話就自然出來了。

1975年間，老季在台去看系主任，要经过考试院，周家亲属并不是一件简单的事。到了那里系主任本人完全不知道，也停留不了多久。

老季，谢谢你，你心里平安，我们也好过些。系主任当年为我们花了那么多心血，最后EE61还是有人看他走完最后一程。

My dear EE61 Cheng Kung University classmates:

Your e-mail brought fond memories in the past! We are now all over the globe! These[W1] inspired me to write what I know about EE61. I do not know everything, but can provide pieces that give a small window to the life in the U.S.

I worked in Boston area for years, Include Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corp., and RCA. While in Boston, I met 張鍾濬 & 夫人 at Harvard, we played 麻将. In Washington D.C., we organized a EE61 dinner party in honor of him. He does not accept invitation unless one makes a big $ donate to his university! EE61 is exception. I visited them in NY, they have an apartment on the west side, with fantastic view of Central Park. I also visited 劉炯朗 & 夫人 at their Apartment near MIT. They encouraged me to take courses at MIT. They told me not to be afraid! MIT has “A” & “B” courses. Meaning, the professor will not fail those, who brave enough to attend their classes!

劉炯朗 & 夫人 worked extremely hard, they sit back-to-back in their home office, often right after dinner in the evening. I did not take MIT courses, partly due to busy projects, mostly due to “Fear!”

While working for RCA in NJ, 季兆澍 & 夫人 and we lived in the same apartment complex. We invite each other for dinner often. 季兆澍 built a color TV from Radio Shake kits and he is deeply knowledgeable about stock trading! I met 陳金福 during one of my business trips to Dayton OHIO, he worked at GM. I met 武修, he was once a high-ranking U.S Government consultant with high powered speech writer to prepare his speeches. I met 嚴經國 (Yen Jing) at Dallas often and seeking advice for my projects. I visited 謝肇金 and take a tour of his company/plant, he employed hundreds of engineers.

I met 顏守謙 while he opened a store to sell computers. 丘鎮蜀 visited us in New Jersey. We met 方廷昭 in LA, He loves to play golf. We stayed with his family one night on our way to Taipei. His mother asked how my son, Edward, knows so many vocabularies. The answer is “Muppet show, big bird and friend.” Where is 余益定? He had small manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, received patent/honor for his work. He feasted me while visiting Taipei. Where is the one and only girl in EE61?

I remembered an incidence when I was working for Digital Equipment Corporation. We worked on a project to connect field offices in the U.S. together by using teletype. I was on a night shift to conduct an important testing; I dropped a box of IBM card on the floor! It was daybreak when I finally put the IBM cards together! Sure, I did not cry! EE61 get up where he falls! The U.S. Government saw our work and asked Digital to participate to connect national laboratories together. One thing led to another, the schools are internet connected, the home are internet connected, and the entire world is internet connected today! This happened like a dream!

You are all 髙手為電機系争光! I miss you all! This is a span of more than 50 years life in brief, for what I know about EE61 in the U.S. Please help if my memory is not correct! Thanks!

Today is January 6, 2022, it is a big day in Washington D.C. I just watched President Biden made a speech in the Capital. I am not very political but live here so long drag me into sensitive political events. The U.S. China relation, the climate change, the pandemic all too big for me! We all retired, can EE61 collectively make a small contribution?

This is the year of the tiger. I am a tiger! Hope the best for all EE61, no matter where you are!

我刚才查了一下。Georgia tech 电机系全国排名第四，和MIT相呼应为南北两大科技名校，我上礼拜已经说过。

在中国也是如此，清华北大有盛名，但是只論工学院，哈尔滨工程大学排第一。

很慚愧的是我母校Uni of IL，过去二十年电机系不停退步。UI也有全国第一，就是中国学生最多，有5仟人，占全校同学生1/6。

我不应该在香槟城教書，应该在哪儿开中国饭店，做学生公寓包租公什么的。

033 交流电机的秘密李雄武 1/6/2022

元生1962当过王戴的助教，王教授风度翩翩，一手漂亮的黑板字。他教“交流电机”是大三重点課，很難。

嘿嘿，难也难不到EE61。我们抓住一个窍门，也是公开秘密，王教授的考题都来自一本英文教科书，作者萨本栋Pen-Tung Sah。每次考交流机，同学们在系图书馆考古，争讀这本书，考完笑嘻嘻。

萨的书今天还可以在Amazon買到，used from $4.61。此书1946年出版精装重2磅，包邮！便宜的不敢想像。我不明白，Amazon为什么不把此书丢掉反而少赔点？

萨出生于福州，著名的色目人萨氏家族，中央研究院院士；Ohio State University 客座教授，国立厦门大学第一任校长，1949年在美国逝世，享年47岁。萨的叔祖父，是袁世凯的海军总长萨镇冰。萨本栋儿子萨支唐発明CMOS，是台积电產品的老祖宗，老K應該熟悉。支唐在U of Illinois 和我同事二十年。

萨家祖孙幾代傑出，DNA真是有道理。

1958成大大一下，周武修和我住台南東宁路一间民房，六个榻榻米，那天四位餓汉挤在一张小桌打桥牌。主隊是周和我，客隊是張鍾濬謝肇金。

输隊要请吃砂锅，大家都爱吃，110磅体重更需要吃，但都没钱。

战况拉锯，胜负在最后一盤。張考虑出牌，摸摸这张，摸摸那張，不能决定。謝隊友急的不得了，挤眉弄眼唉声叹气，各种暗示小动作，就是不能开口，要遵守奥林匹克运动精神。5分钟后，张终于出牌。

一张牌摆在桌子上，顿时空气凝结地球停转，八只眼睛瞪着，是一张数字牌。

牌是出错了，客隊全盘皆输。是可忍孰不可忍，謝跳起来叫道：

“老K嗎！我要你出老K!”

老K這個外號替謝帶來好運，他發明的InGaAsP laser at 1.25 micron，引導光纖維通訊美夢成真！

系主任在天上會說：怎麼？又是一個長腿的。

元生威囯，我講的故事都是真的。

老K發明新laser，非常慚愧，我這個同行不懂，於是我用Costco經驗問他：

“你的laser多少錢一個？買一打有折扣嗎？”

老K這樣回答：

“我記不太清楚，反正我們產品經常在漲價，不論漲多少，都是供不應求。“

中國和美國技術交流的老祖宗，老K也有一份。當年老K協助中國郵局在武漢設立工廠，是中美合資的最先例，也是鄧小平親自批准的第一個案子。

這一切的開始，就是64年前，他在台南東寧路五個榻榻米的房間輸掉一個，不，半個成大福利社砂鍋。

老張也輸了半個砂鍋，他後來的發展我就不多講了。

老K講的"可悲"是一般社會討論，並不是講自己，我下面的話也是如此。

“寸草心”和“三春暉”是相互存在的，沒有一就沒有二。一般美國家庭，兒女到了18歲，父母給他們兩隻皮箱，自己知道要離家自力更生。反看EE61的父母，培養我們到大學畢業，還舉債送出國。

另外一個原因是中國文明，百行孝為先。所以除了錢以外，華人兒女對父母有天生的感情和義務。

時代進步，現在“養兒防老”觀念越來越淡。退休老人生活大部分靠自理。真正走到最後一程，兒女不論中外，還是會來照應的。

Unfortunately, as we are getting older, a few of us will be requiring full-time care. Either at home or at a nursing home. I have a friend who is in such a situation. She also has dementia and could no longer speak English. This has imposed an extreme hardship on her family.

My guess is that after her retirement over 10 years ago, she only associated with Chinese, and consequently she only spoke Chinese, read Chinese and wrote in Chinese. She somehow lost her English skill. Therefore it is my viewpoint that we should continue to polish our English skill, particularly in speaking. Otherwise, we could add additional burden to our family.

最近成大同學談孟郊遊子吟的英文翻譯，我在百度找到一個好版本，有詩意也押韻，尤其是最後兩句寸草心的英文很巧妙。

我更有興趣的是這首詩英文朗誦。我做了一個視頻，包括兩位朗誦員：

A。中國人，像是一個女學生 (copied from Baidu)。

B。標準美國廣播員 ( I made it with an online translator)。

比較之下，我以為中國人有鄉音，但這女學生很努力，每一個音節都不放過。沒有北方人的捲舌，也不是廣仔，到有點像我們江西人。唐詩英譯，美國人朗誦怪怪的。打個比方，你吃滿漢全席，走出來致意的大廚，是個卷頭髮的老墨，是不是有點倒胃口？60年前在台灣，老美講兩句簡單中文，怪聲怪氣，大家受寵若驚拼命鼓掌，“這太抬舉中國人了”。現在桌子翻過來了，唐人唸唐詩，有點口音算什麼？外國人多聽听就習慣了。

以上寫的是“現場”反應，沒有多考慮。再經過幾天的反复聽，我最後的結論是：老美廣播員比較好。

Nearly one in every two American adults—about 47%—have been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

I always had excuses. White coat anxiety. My readings fluctuated. I had no symptoms. But I am 81! Finally, a month ago I came to my senses and started taking BP medicine. Several remarks of my experience are given below.

1. The drug is effective. No side effects. A common drug Losartan at $5.24/month keeps my BP in the normal range.

2. I bought a BP monitor from Amazon. It is excellent.

3. The new monitor has a nice feature: BP data can be uploaded to my cell phone via Blue Tooth, where data can be plotted to trace my BP fluctuation. Next time I will show the plot to my doctor to counter white coat elevation.、

4. I trust only BP information from the main stream media such as America Heart Association, WebMD etc. I don't read folk prescriptions.

5. Using the iPhone, I used to track my walking steps daily. Now I track my BP. After all BP is the dreadful silent killer.

6. I pay more attention to my diet. No coke, no processed meat, reduced salt intake etc.

I try to relax more by doing meditation, Tai Chi, listening to soothing music.... Soon I realize that is where my problem lies. I try so hard to relax that my BP rises. Finally, I write this article to remind myself "don’t relax".

這個視頻讓我想起當年的大專聯考，全省報考人數將近七萬人，但考場沒有視頻中這麼擁擠的景觀。印象最深的是考前必須交的志願表，高中生那裡知道自己的興趣，大多同學依慣例，根據前一年各校科系的錄取分數，按順序密密麻麻的填了近百個志願。

誤打誤撞考進了某個科系，就幾乎決定往後一生的前途。不過回想起來，我們經過聯考的洗禮，算是幸運的一群人。

1957我参加台湾联考甲組，考6科：囯英数物理化学三民主义。我成積平平，三民主义異优，侥幸录取第五志愿：成大电机系。

如今80老人看回头路，联考有惊无险，阿弥陀佛。

三民主义救国，也救了我。

后来他们在美国学术界都很有成就，人才呀！

历来狀元出在哪个专业？

大陸：经济，管理，电子

台湾：医学，电机，外语

大陆是向“前”看，台湾学生一考進医学院，媒婆在门外排队，学费，生活费，毕业后出国深造，开医院土地楼房，女方全包了，也是向前看。

还是古代好，進京考试要有一大笔盘缠。寒士住在妓院，一代红妆狀元郎，赛金花就是其中之一。想的是美，但负心郎多，状元有机会当驸马，怎么会接受“半点朱唇万人尝”？

回忆自己71年前小学毕业，家住台北的好中学一个也没考上，只有通学火車程17分钟，進縣立板桥初级中学。家父脸上无光，不好意思出门见亲戚朋友。想不到後來我板中同学个个有兩把刷子，真是“英雄不怕出身低”！我保存了五张板中毕业照片，前几天做了一个视频作纪念。

我把制作视频經驗写下来，供朋友参考。

1。全程我用一部手机iPhone 13，兩软件是免费的from App Store.

2。用软件1，補上色修老照片 “AI colorize restore old photo”，効果还可以。

3。音乐用张震岳的“再见”。在网上我找到一段男声合唱，用手机上video recorder录下来。

4。用软件2，“快影”制作视频。

我强力推荐快影，它是当今红遍中国“快手kuaishou”的姐妹軟件，功能強大，易學易用，零基础开始一两天就可以出品视频。远胜过我以前用的InShot, 也省了$15一年。

2. Chinese celebrate 玖(和久同音), do not celebrate 拾(和死同音)

3. In only four years, you will be considered 89 in Taiwan or China and this will be the time to cerebrate the birthday. Most of us should be still OK. Why don‘t you plan for the celebration.

照片(video)成災！

生命誠可貴，照片价更高。世代相传，照片永远不会消失。美丽的回忆來自科学进步：當今技術照片比本人漂亮。不少人活在照片中，蔡依林是世界名模，有誰看过她本人？

我無颜值，自己照片不看也罢。但周围親人朋友的照片，我肯下功夫处理，这也是一种自娱。

我对照片有几点坚持：

1。Resolution低的照片2MB 以下，video 1080p 以下，我不保存。例外是我儿子3, 40年前的VHS，我把它们转换成mp4，看不清楚，但我己尽最大努力。

2。钱花在刀口上，在iCloud，Google drive我有400 GB storage，每月费用几块钱，還買不到一個漢堡。手机用iPhone 13 pro，最近对深圳出产的DJI 更是蠢蠢欲动。

3。video长度我尽量保持在2分钟以下，别人的耐心，時間是有限的。我大部分视频保存在YouTube, TikTok 上，免费，观看方便，用unlisted不相干的人看不到。

4。照片视频经过edit后往往有想不到的改进。大陆上的美颜太过份，不自然。一般照片用iPhone上自帶的edit已经够了。Video editing 我用免费的“快影”，十分满意，大陆在这方面，包括DJI摄像头，已经领先世界。

5。手机照相一切自动，我唯一心得是尽量用三脚架，我video照不好的原因，90%是手抖。

6。不要用手机拍团体照，七八个人同框，脸孔看不清楚，不如拍一个小video，从左到右每个人都扫到，更不用说动态勝静态。

我上面的“坚持”，可以说是一个初学者的偏见，内行人辛勿見笑。

LED发明者 Prof. Nick Holonyak, 93, 前几天西去。我和他在 University of Illinois 电机系共事40年，但接触不多。Nick的大弟子馮明是我的好友，从他那里我经常听到Nick的故事。

Nick在2000中期退休，和夫人搬入一本地着名的养老院。经常来请教探望Nick的人很多，但十多年过去，不說门前冷落车马稀，這份热情也就自自然然淡下去。

馮明本人也是世界级的学者，他的专业我不甚了解。馮明天生一幅好歌喉，他一曲“负心的人”在当地華人圈出名，周末我们经常在一起karaoke胡闹。Party开晚了，馮一定起身离去，口中念念：Nick明早等我的宫保鸡丁。

原来冯明每周末必去养老院看Nick，带有两个外卖的中国菜，十年如一日。

Nick是世界级的名学者，他的朋友弟子崇拜者何止上千？但最后真正为他关门的，还是一位中国徒弟！

World famous LED inventor, Prof. Nick Holonyak, passed away at age 93. For forty years we were colleagues in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Illinois. Since we have different specializations and our offices were far apart, we didn't run into each other regularly. Nick's longest-serving disciple, Professor Milton Feng, is my good friend, and I often heard stories about Nick from him.

Nick retired in the mid-2000s. He and his wife, Kay, moved from their Urbana home into a nearby retirement community. Nick's advice continued to be in demand, and he was frequently visited by his colleagues, students, friends, and admirers. Time kills everything. after ten some years, that enthusiasm faded.

Milton himself is also a world-class scholar. I do not know his specialty that well, but I do know he has a good singing voice. He is famous in the local Chinese circle for his song "Heartless Man 负心的人". We often got together for karaoke parties on weekends. Whenever the karaoke party got late, Milton stood up to leave and murmured "Nick would be waiting for his Kung Pao Chicken tomorrow." It turned out that for all these years, 15 years or more, Milton went to the retirement home every weekend. He always arrived with takeout dishes from a local Chinese restaurant.

Nick was a world-class scholar. His friends, students and admirers numbered in the thousands and his work changed all our lives. But in the end, the one who closed the door for Nick was his Chinese disciple.

老李:

LED諾獎是應該頒發給 Prof. Holonyak, 他是最初開發出LED的元老. 知道如何做LED之後不同波長的激光或較簡易的LED只是半導體材料的成長技术. 誰都知道要發白光基本材料是GaN, 我的博士論文便是成長GaN, 然後做成P-N junction, 通電便是發白光的LED. 可惜的是那時元材料的成長設備還沒有開發出, 這要到90年代這類設備如 MBE 或 MOCVD 才開發出來. (这要归功于 Al Cho 和 Bell Lab 的同事们的努力.) 有了这些設備, 便比较容易的成长出所需要的材料. 我做出来的1.3到1.5波长的激光laser也是用同样的原理和设备做出来的. 高琨就因為光纖通讯的研究开发, 使他拿到了诺奖，但不幸的是他那时候已经老人痴呆，只有他的夫人带她去领奖了.

这三个日本人有了这些设备做出白光的LED是在意料中的事, 就因为这样就拿诺奖, 实在是对Holonyak不公. 不过有很多奖要靠很多人际关系. 很多时候,奖也很容易给错了人.

Many years ago, when I learned that they didn't give Nick the Nobel Prize,

I immediately thought, lucky SL, he was no longer in this world, otherwise, he would be

very sad. The same year, I heard that when Nakamura received the Nobel for his

Blue LED, immediately sent Nick an email thanking him, stating that without his

Red LED, he wouldn't be invented Blue LED.

香檳大學城有位赫赫有名的發明家Nick Holonyak。1962年發明第一粒紅光二極體（LED，light emitting diodes），這是繼愛迪生發明電燈之後，最重要的燈光科技大躍進。1995年他榮獲日本政府頒贈科學界最高榮耀「日本獎」，應邀與夫人前往東京，接受日本天皇頒獎的殊榮。頒獎儀式上，他謙稱只想在自己的研究領域散發一點微光。然而在場觀禮的人士無不奉他為科技界的「可見光LED之父」；他發明的紅光二極體，如天上的繁星，將在世界每個角落散發光芒。

頒獎儀式宴會上，他坐在日本皇太后美智子旁邊，他告訴美智子，年輕時曾是駐紮橫濱的美軍，非常懷念日本兒童歌曲，美智子開始唱兒歌給他聽，一曲又一曲。哇，只有我們大學城的科學家才有此榮幸，在國宴上，聆聽日本皇太后美妙的歌聲。

他從日本領獎回來了。有一天在電機系館前人行道上，晨光下他看見地上閃閃發亮的一分錢，立即俯身拾起，瞬間，跟行經的我四目交接，他孩子似地興奮舉起亮晶晶的銅幣說：「窮的時候，一分錢也寶貴得很啊！」即使才榮獲大獎，剛剛跟日本皇室比肩同座，共享盛宴。他仍然牢牢記著，自己是烏克蘭移民礦工的孩子。

2.調光器的發明

秋高氣爽的夜晚，我們邀請科學家與夫人來寒舍共享龍蝦晚餐，酒過幾巡，談天說笑間，我們的孩子回家了，急切地想看看這位了不起的發明家，迫不及待地詢問Nick的發明。Nick站起來，用調光器關掉客廳、飯廳、廚房的電燈，屋子一片漆黑，唯有音響、電腦以及家裡其他電器產品上的小燈亮著，如夜空中燦爛的行星，他指著那些小燈說：「這些燈的元件都是LED做的，將來電燈泡很快也要被取代。」接著他指著調光器說：「那調光器組合配件也是我發明的。」「真的？怎麼發明的？何時發明？」容貌細緻如中國瓷器的科學家夫人，敘述了科學家發明調光器的來龍去脈：

「你們可能注意到，Nick平常想東西的時候，喜歡扭轉他的捲髮，你們或許也聽說，Nick每天喜歡泡又長又熱的熱水澡。有天，他躺在浴缸泡澡，一邊扭著他的捲髮，一邊想著他的實驗和測量，東想想這個液晶，西想想那發光的二極管，突然望著天花板的燈，那燈光太亮了，照得他的眼睛不舒服，他真想把那光線調暗淡一些，他想著，想著，突然靈光一閃，Eureka！Eureka！Nick差點要從浴缸跳出來。隔天跑到實驗室，開始研究調光器的組合配件。」

調光器的發明居然來自浴缸的泡澡經驗，可真神奇啊！Nick不僅發明高效率的可見光，亦能調整光的強度。從十字路口的訊號燈到調光器等等，他的發明為全球節省大量的能源。科學家頭髮猶豐，經年舉重鍛鍊的身軀依然健壯，未來定然會有更多的發現與發明。

3.簡樸的生活

Nick的父親是東歐烏克蘭移民，伊利諾州南方煤礦小鎮的工人，含辛茹苦地培植他讀完大學及研究所。Nick是兩度諾貝爾獎約翰．巴丁教授的第一個入門弟子，巴丁是電晶體的發明人之一，也是低溫超導理論的創始者。Nick兩度進白宮接受兩位布希總統頒獎，並自俄國總統普丁手中領取「全球能源獎」；麻省理工學院授與Lemelson-MIT發明獎，也是伊利諾州林肯獎的得主，2008年選入美國名人殿堂，集眾多榮耀於一身。你可能以為這位聞名遐邇的發明家一定忙著四處旅行演講或者主持國際研討會。不，他過著極端規律而簡樸的生活。

去年11月3日Nick行將八十，還沒想到退休，每天風雪無阻，清早準七點搭公車上班，繼續勤勉不倦於研究工作，中午吃個三明治，再繞到大學書店翻閱科技書籍，順便買一份《紐約時報》。假使你在書店與他不期而遇，他會告訴你正在讀那本書，他會忘情地滔滔不絕講說他的讀書心得，你肯定會被那陶醉於知識之海的熱忱而感動，讓你感覺人生值得活千百倍。下午二點鐘，他親手研磨烹調咖啡，在辦公室接待客人、學者、記者、專利律師（注：他是大學城擁有最多專利的發明家）。咖啡時間，最愛的還是與同事、學生談論新觀念、新影片、新發明，談他的學術恩師以及礦工父親。

古老中國，學子們追隨孔夫子聽他談哲論理，如何修道成聖；晚近，去北京的人一定要去拜訪才子錢鍾書；而從世界各地慕名前來香檳的科學家，則無不熱切地尋找機會接近這位發明家，談論他的研究實驗：複合半導體雷射、發光電晶體等。若能與科學家晤談，是他們畢生的榮幸。但他不計名利，深居簡出，性情直率，聽說，他曾緊閉門戶，拒絕跟約會遲到的大人物見面。

咖啡時間三點準時結束，這時科學家隔窗眺望不遠的停車場，車子等在那裡，纖細的夫人搖下車窗，有默契地向他微笑揮手示意。來訪的客人陪著走下樓，他偕同老伴一道回家了。

4.黑暗與明亮

礦工父親，弓著身子在漆黑的坑道裡挖掘煤礦，他親眼看見父親勞瘁地吐出鮮紅的血。

發明家兒子，一頭栽入科學實驗室鑽研探測，奇異地發明紅光LED，照亮世界。

Thank you so much for a lot wonderful story about me and Nick and our great and exciting times on Karaoke at your houses!!

In the bright day of 1974, I transferred from Caltech to UIUC to pursue my dream on solid state microelectronics for revolutionary chips technology! was really want to work for CT Sah on MOS for CCD! Then I learn took other classes and identify I really want to be hands on experimental research! I really enjoy great teachers in ECE that they are the real contributors! When I took Nick class, he try to point the essential point instead of plugging equations on each other! It was my life change moment! I saw the difference between do something real rather than showing off!

I then talk to Nick and meet Stillman and John Bardeen in his Lab! I was so excited to see the two time Nobel Prize Winner! I become first student of Stillman and also first grad student of Nick! Often we saw Bardeen in Nick Lab and listen to Nick new discovery ! This may explain why I was so close the these great mentors! Nick and Stillman treat every student like his children ! I was good student but not the smartest one but I did my honest work and learn a lot from them. In 1977, I saw the First Quantum Well Laser demonstrated! Nick students work two shifts and 24/7 ! Suddenly, I realize you need not to be smartest but you need to work hard for realized and competitive to be a winner!

After 12 years in industry and do well as Director and CTO of Ford, one day Greg and Nick talk to me about return to UIUC for establish high speed devices and ICs! I did in 1990 ! Always have great time to work with real friendships with Stillman and Nick ! I believe I have most co author paper with Nick than anyone! In 2004, Nick and I co inventing transistor laser. He say This is great invention for next generation and your name will last like transistor and LED. I am so happy to know that what Nick think about me! Now both of them left us with LED and Laser! We just need to move forward to make the next breakthrough for better future!

Several times, I saw many Universities want to give him and Bardeen Honor Degrees but they all decline, he told me work and results are more important than Russia General Medal 🏅! I think I understand!

My last visit to Nick and Kay Holonyak was Mooncakes 🥮 festive that I bring two mooncakes for them and enjoy good conversation! He passed away peacefully at 93! I know a lot of Nick and have great times to see a giant figure - The Father of LED and First visible laser in 1962!, QW Laser, Oxide VCSELS and transistor laser ! His many work have impact our daily life will last longer than any Prize! I miss a great teach, mentor, colleague and friend!

But I need move forward with competing research and enjoy karaoke with a big smiles! I will have my 48 PHD graduated! One just got over $200K/yr job offer for 5G ! One of my old student went back Shanghei in 2012 and went public in 2019 and become billionaire! EM and microelectronics are good!! See you someday in Las Vegas!

成大一年级，武修和我在東寕路分租一小间国民住宅，六个榻榻米。山𣎴在高，有宝則灵，隔一矮竹篱笆有位包小姐，台南女中校花，艳光照人。老張那時住市中心周法官家，三五不時來我们宿舍，一来就不肯走。当年2023眼镜还没有发明，我们三位“偷看”是绝对的，表示成大电机新生身心健康。

再回到今天，我对同学健康很关心。老，，老，唉，，

老牛“牙齿不好”，那就要吃嫩草，总不能让他挨饿吧？！

雄武，你的保密功夫是一流的，往事經過了六十多年，一個甲子，才稍稍的走漏一𢇁風声，佩服佩服！這位包小姐成功的成为成功大学的成绩特優的学生的另一半，原来其來有自，今天才見一𢇁端倪。

你们三人當時骤在一起，所謂物以类聚，人傑地霊，三人皆出類拔粹，皆是頂尖人物，而且一生事皆有成，爲成大争光！早知如此，我们當時都該住到你们附近，説不定可以沾上一点光，後來的日子，会好过一些！

你们有嫩草可吃，羡慕羡慕！我却早就挨餓了！喝点咖啡，就行了！

About 30 years ago, Lena and I attended a banquet. Dave was the featured speaker at the banquet. He seemed to be nervous and delivered his speech below his normal par. While he was giving the speech. Lean was looking around the room. One lady sitting at the back caught Lena's attention. The lady was beautiful. She was stately and looked almost like a statue. Lena pointed out the lady to me. It turned out she was Dave's old flame. This explained why Dave was nervous!

Chao Chi's friendship with Miss China.

During a visit to Chao's house during our senior year, Taiwan's first Miss China happened to be at his house as well. Thanks to Chao, it was once in a lifetime experience for me to talk to a beauty queen!

To begin with, I would say I am very impressed with your English. The words you used in your story, such as normal par, stately, old flame, it will take me a lifetime to learn how to use them! No wonder you have excelled your career in United States political arena!

You let me decide to share with our class about the story. It is easy. My answer is DEFINITELY yes.

I might add to your Chao Chi's story:

If I remembered correctly, I also attended the party in Chao's home where we met Miss Jin Yee Lin, the 1st Miss China in Taiwan. It was a dancing party, and I had the chance to have a dance with her! She is truly beautiful! I did not even know whether I have stepped on her toe or not. The music ended too soon!

Some twenty years later around 1986, when Chao and I both came to the bay area near Cupertino, California. Chao and Kitty invited me to have dinner at his home one day. I met Miss Lin again. If my memory did not fail me, Miss Lin have married to a dentist and lived in the same area then. After dinner, we played Mahjong together. I think I lost some money because I was so fascinated that I could not think straight! Don't blame me for that. I think everyone of us will be just as confused as I was then. Chao was a lucky guy. He got a beautiful wife, and his wife has so many beautiful friends to social together, and he mingled happily among them!

1。李周張和包小姐比邻而居，不说近水楼台，半年连话也没讲过。最亲密的接触是隔一层墙，听到踢踏舞皮鞋声。

2。张校长公开演讲，是小菜一碟。那一次失常，原因是前女友坐在观众席，面寒霜如石膏像，没有鼓掌。

3。元大师年少英俊，巧遇中国小姐林静宜于老季台北家。有缘再相会，廿年后舊金山重逢，跳舞踩佳人脚，意乱情迷没戏了。

总结：EE61三战三敗！希望好戏在后面。

老季老k禹哥典立还没登场，我十分期待他们的故事。

如果我腦子还管用的话，你说有関老K 的故事有誤！老K是在 Los Angles 的 USC，不是在 Berkeley. 倒是他在成大時心儀甚久的成大校花，建築系的張潤禮小姐是在 Berkeley. 她後來在 San Jose 這邊做到 5 所 Community Colleges 的縂校长！後來被夏威儀大学 University of Hawaii 挖去當該校的校長！

而事实上你才是自己在 Berkeley 拿下博士！你說的 Berkeley 的故事，是不是你自己的故事！会不会是周冠謝戴？老K要不要出來澄清一下武修的張冠李戴？？？

老K and I were both at Berkeley for a while. But he decided to transfer to USC while I continued to stay at Berkeley. I do not know exactly why he wanted to transfer to USC. Maybe he could not deal with all the attention he got from the girls at Berkeley!

哈哈,終於想到我了.

很遺憾我沒能參于諸位精彩的過往,近十來年跟武修見面的次數較多.

在成大的日子,不讀書,只顧玩和打彈子,很少跟系內同學互動,也沒男女豔事.

也就參加不了跟各位一起回憶.

記憶最深的是在畢業舞會曾跟雄武那時的女友一舞,忘了她姓名.

我出校後,日子過得挺折騰的,三次婚姻踫到三個對我寬容成全的女人,

成就了我的任性;前兩次共25年(9,16),48歲退出職場,

52歲第三婚至今,她比我小2歲,是我青梅竹馬的初戀,

當時兩人都是無業狀態,相約一起過日子玩耍,就這麼過了30多年,

這段期間,我臺美兩地每三個月換住,疫情和年齡的現實,我們決定依約

在各自子女地分別過自己的餘年.

我2021回台定居,巧合的是離美的日子是她的生日,

我到臺的日子是我的生日,我倆現是名副其實的精神伴侶,

每週一次通話,說家常報平安.

我現獨居淡水山區,生活自理,社交活動越來越少,每週有一次跟女兒餐聚,

都好吃,她找餐廳我出錢.

我給自己的自我安慰是-山中無日月,悠然自在活.

050 用中文还是英文？李雄武 01/12/2023

老同学通讯，用中文或英文？这个议题在我板中同学会多次讨论，我归纳如下。

1。方便

现在中文输入，可以用手写或语音，后者有AI，我的江西口音也没问题。但是有些人不愿意学，或缺乏工具，所以还用英文，六十年的习惯难改。

2。能力

我们这一代華人，英文写作大概是美国人的中学程度，记流水账写专业可以，但沾上一点文學，寫心情幽默，詩與遠方就没法多。什么事都有例外，我有几位老同学都是英文高手。

3。总结

論方便，英文略勝。論能力，外国文绝对打不过毋語。

最后讲一个武修传来的实例。某君是最后一代的外省人，退休后生活在华人圈廿年，吃中餐打麻将看大陆电视剧，如鱼得水。老伴走了，自已進养老院，忘记了英文，无法与人沟通，这条鱼掉进了一个干池塘。

昨天晚上，和在髙䧺的老友李鐘鑫聊天！

他提到我们在二月初的 ZOOM 团驟会上，大家聊天，非常慹閙！那天他來的最晚，説話較少！我在後面，特别向大家推荐，李兄做事蹈实，但是文采風流！他做的詩，以詩誌亊誌情，是第一流的水平！要他有空, 補作一首诗作，和大家分享！

下面是他傳來他的近作，対我们大家, 由六一年畢業🎓分㪚，在分手的六十一年之後，各分东西南北，相矩千万里之遥，仍然能在 ZOOM 上，歡驟一堂，有無限的感慨和祝福！

名歌星莫文蔚新歌“世界那么多人”，網上聽眾超過百萬。好友杨君翻唱一遍，我也喜欢。作曲者Akiyama Sayuri 何许人也？网上追踪，他是沈陽小提琴家彭飞。堂堂一个中国人，怎么取个日本名字？

当然别人可以反问我：你这个洋名Andy是什么？唉，一言难盡。六十年前台湾人出国90%有洋名，藉口是你的中文名老美不会发音，你無法出人头地。不瞒你说，这方面我还有个铁打的証明。

1962成大电机系第一名，我好友張鐘𣿰錄取哈佛應用物理系，同班有三位联考状元。没错，三位狀元：上一届的張紹進，本届的沈良璣，下一届的陳小姐，大名我不記得，她不服兵役所以提早趕到，清一色都是台大。我们成大系主任周肇西教授，本身也是哈佛，在台湾大学排行当老二，受气多年。这次抓住机会在台南校园张贴红字海报，报告本系畢業生在哈佛和台大状元们平起平坐。这个“平”可害惨了鐘𣿰，成大的希望呀！只有拼命。

终于哈佛举行一重要考试，這天老教授課堂发考卷，惯例是依考分第一第二順序發下。鐘𣿰考得不错，眼巴巴廿多份考卷全部出手，三位状元名列前茅，就是没有听到自己的名字，冷汗，煎熬！

最后搞明白，原来鐘𣿰的英文名字是：

考卷上他用钢笔英文草書，墨水透纸看不太清楚。老花眼看了三遍，教授终于叫道：

清? Oh, 清清? AhAh，

清清清！

你不要笑，你把上面三个英文字唸一唸，会強过老教授吗？

有了这次痛苦经验，張兄改名為 David，從此一帆风顺做出一番事業。

Glad to hear back from David, anyhow. The last time I heard about David was when we met a lady in a Chinese function in Follinger Great Hall in Illinois. She told me that David is the president of some Chinese association in New York City. I asked her to send our regards to David. Not sure if David received it.

什么事都有第一次，这“第一次”有一股神秘的力量，以后再做，可能更好，但无法超越。

1953年18岁的潘秀琼第一次录制“情人的眼泪”，她歌声低廻沙哑，作曲姚敏跳过自己的亲妹妹姚莉選潘主唱。潘音域不够宽，高音有难度，反复练习，急的哭了。最后姚大師把曲子降低半个音階，才有流传后世的这首名曲。翻唱“情人的眼泪”歌星太多了，包括蔡琴姚苏蓉邓丽君蔡幸娟，但在我还是恋恋于第一次的潘秀琼。

1962我在三重浦宪兵学校受訓，邻坐的于胖是抗日各將于學忠的公子，他跟申學庸學音乐。有一天于胖唱一首新歌给我聽，情人的眼泪，從此這歌伴我一生。离开宪兵学校，我再也没有见过于胖，天涯海角，我希望他一生过得好。

近年股市专家不断指出美国经济基本脆弱，股市随时要崩盘。他们的分析振振有词，吓死不少人。

但是事实如何？今年S&P500 涨了 26% 。假如我们听了这些末日专家的话，把股票在年初全部出清，那真要后悔到死，是真死，不是吓死。

我个人推荐傻瓜投资法，闭眼睛買S&P500 ETF，买完打死不賣。我也不必天天追踪股市，网上有报告如下（图是我画的）：

S&P500 过去十年平均每年回報 =13%

当然你可能做得更好，但或然率非常小。

傻瓜投资还有2个附带的好处：

七十二年前我们在板桥初中教室坐在一起。过去七年，在美国退休社区，他是我们的隔壁邻居。多幸运，我有这样一位终生好友。

我初中同学在美国十多个，最得人缘是老杜，因为他慷慨热心。最近传闻，老杜健康不佳，同学关心。两个月前，阿挽，莊岳千里迢迢到西雅图去看他。过去一周，老杜夫妇在Henderson 舍下作客，我近距离观察，完全不是那一回事，他健康没有问题，特别是他意志力强，乐观！我家后面有一条山路来回2.4哩，升高300呎。老杜走一趟面不红气不，，，小喘，胜过九成同年龄的老人。

是的，老杜的“下水道”有问题，已经17年，最近稍有变化，外表看不出，只是出门到处找厕所。他PSA是两位数，老杜查過醫學文獻，不要紧，PSA最高可上万。

老杜一家人，女儿儿子女婿媳妇全是學医的，但杜府最高医学权威是老杜自己。他不听医生，有病百分之百自疗。

普通人有高血压，按时定量吃药。老杜这次来访，飛機上carryon四个血压计，千真万确是4个，一天量七八次，包括半夜上厕所量3次。一旦血压超标，马上服药，剂量不定，看超标程度决定。上次挽華来訪，老杜激动血压升过200，立马服药，立马正常，第二天老杜又恢復不吃药了。阿挽给老杜送上六瓶保健药，老杜正准备退还。

老年人如我，一年看牙医两次，洗牙补牙植牙，花钱花时间。老杜调侃我说：40年前他半夜開車到醫學院，一早起來牙齒完全拔光，全包$250！从此高枕无忧，吃排骨啃苹果，再也没有花过一毛钱，嘻嘻，还不要扎“不痛”的麻醉針，没有 x-ray 可能的伤害。

我是不忍心说：老杜，你不是喜欢唱两句歌？你漏气，是从哪里漏出来的？

老杜一生奋斗，家有贤妻，三代同堂，是幸福人生。身体有些小毛病，但心肺脑筋健康，一定长寿，我祝福他。我本地朋友中有位大佬，听说老杜的故事，他把大拇指一伸说，老杜是个人才！

I visited my new family doctor at Village Medical, located inside Walgreens on Hampton Road this morning.Village Medical is a major national company, partially owned by Walgreens, with 680 locations and over 20 thousand workers. I was very impressed by its local office, which is sizable, modern, and clean. As a new patient, I had to fill out my medical history, which is typically done by hand and can be tedious and incomplete. However, at Village Medical, this history is filled out on a computer tablet, making the process easy and, most importantly, accurate.My doctor, Dr. Guillermo Fraga is 63 years old and graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. He has been practicing internal medicine for 36 years. On WebMD (https://doctor.webmd.com), Dr. Fraga has a five-star rating based on 48 ratings. He speaks perfect English, is friendly, and has a cheerful demeanor. It's interesting to note that Dr. Fraga was the chief medical officer at a hospital where Dr. Wen Liang was an intern in 1996.In summary, I have a very positive impression of my first visit with Dr. Fraga.

Since my move to Henderson, I have been under the care of 2 family doctors, namely, Rita Chuang and Wen Liang. My health has generally been stable, and as a result, I haven't formed a particularly close relationship with either of them. However, I recently made the decision to part ways with Dr. Liang, as he transitioned to a VIP doctor status in August. I found it difficult to justify the additional cost of $3,000 for this service.

When it comes to selecting a family doctor, it's not just about medical expertise; it's about finding someone who can effectively manage my health. Availability and communication skills are equally, if not more, important. Dr. Fraga, conveniently located just five minutes from my house, seems promising in this regard.

Additionally, I must admit that I appreciate the ambiance of Dr. Fraga's office. Waiting there almost feels like a mini vacation. See the photo below. Tell me where can you find a doctor whose office has a more beautiful ceiling?

This morning, MS and I unexpertly met with G on the mountain trail. For the past six months, he has been in San Francisco for the treatment of his stomach cancer. After undergoing seven rounds of chemotherapy, he is now cancer-free. He is cheerful and talkative; you wouldn't be able to tell that he just recovered from an illness. It's truly wonderful!

One valuable piece of information I learned from his experience is that all six treatments were completed at San Francisco City Hospital. He had seen approximately 20 different doctors, each a specialist with extensive experience in their respective fields. Such a remarkable experience would not have been possible if he had stayed in Henderson locally.

While i admire and respect my dear friend G among others who chose to go to SF for care of their illness, I was quite sick couple months ago and chose to stay in Henderson. I want to say that I was totally happy with our local hospital which I would not say is the best in the world, but it did a great job to take care of me during my stay .

Now, as of a week ago, I am a happy cured patient of our Henderson hospital. My urologist and family doctor Benjamin 曾 all belong to a local medical group called OptumCare, Southwest Medical. I must say that I can’t say enough good things about their professionalism in their care for me during my illness.

This is a large group care outfit which has just about doctors all disciplines in medical needs. They have their own in-house lab, that tells you how large they are.

Dr. 曾， a wholly different medical doctor than that of 梁，can’t care more for me during my time in his care. He checked on me constantly while I was in the hospital as well as at home.. I am most fortunate to finally get a great doctor that I deserve at my old age of 87.

It is a well known fact that the Vegas area is short handed in terms of well qualifies medical doctors.

However, we do have plenty of good doctors around and you just have to spend time finding them which I must admit that I didn’t.

Zommixk is my urologist recommended by Dr. 曾。 They both belong to

Southwest Medical, part of OptumCare, a very large group care in this area. They have their own in house lab. That tells you how large they are.

I didn’t have the ability to find them. A doctor daughter living in Denver, of my dear friend Jack Chang, 張邦定, located this medical care group after search thru the website in the Vegas area.

I was fortunate to have Dr. 曾 accepted me as a patient.

I am now a happy camper.

It was wonderful to meet with G again this morning on the mountain trail. You wouldn't be able to tell that he had just recovered from a serious illness. He walked briskly and spoke cheerfully. We all conveyed our best wishes.

G shared some valuable insights with me:

To gain admission to the renowned UCSF Hospital in Mission Bay, San Francisco, there are no special prerequisites. You can simply make a call or get a referral from your local doctors.

Over a six-month period, G had to be hospitalized about a dozen times. This made commuting between San Francisco and Henderson a practical option. If one chooses to establish a temporary residence in the Mission Bay area, the average monthly rental cost is approximately $5,000. G secured a 5-month lease from a Chinese condo owner.

G's total medical expenses neared $1 million, with 80% of the cost covered by Medicare. He also has supplemental insurance through AARP, which takes care of most of the remaining expenses. G emphasized that one should avoid purchasing so-called "free" Medicare supplements, as hospitals typically do not accept these.

Throughout his illness, G did not experience many physical discomforts, but he did grapple with mental depression, questioning why he was afflicted. Fortunately, G's naturally cheerful disposition allowed him to cope with this challenge admirably.

5。你走后，别人要替你報遗产税 IRS Form706。但是你没有留下足够的资料，别人要收拾爛攤子。

Below is a simple estate planning guide that you can customize to your unique circumstances. The first part comprises a compilation of laws, regulations and special terms categorized by labels such as LAW01, LAW02, and so forth. The second part features a collection of estate planning insights , each labeled as NUGGETG01, NUGGET02, and so on. These nuggets can be selectively utilized to construct a personalized estate plan.

Part 1 Laws, Regulations and Special Terms

LAW01 Types of Assets

Money: This includes bank accounts, stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts.
Community Properties: These encompass real estate, commodities, art, and collectibles.
Intangibles: This category involves intellectual properties (books, patents), business interests, and insurance policies.

LAW02 Probate

When a person passes away, their estate may undergo a legal process known as probate. During probate, the court oversees the distribution of assets, settlement of debts, and ensures the deceased's wishes are followed. In many cases, probate can be relatively straightforward and completed within a few months, while more complex cases may take a year or longer. Costs can range from a few thousand dollars to a percentage of the estate's value.

LAW03 Means of Transferring Assets of a Deceased Person to Their Beneficiaries

Will (must go through probate)
Trusts (no probate)
Joint Account (possibly subject to probate)
TOD Account (Transfer on Death account, no probate)
Gifts (no probate)

LAW04 TOD Accounts

A TOD account, short for Transfer on Death account, is typically an individual account. Upon the account holder's demise, the assets in the account automatically transfer to the designated beneficiaries.

LAW05 Joint Accounts

A husband and wife, or any two or more individuals may have a joint account (with rights of survivorship) at a financial institution such as Fidelity. If the husband for example passes away, the surviving wife retains full ownership of the account. The deceased husband's 50% share may be subject to estate taxes and the probate process. Note that in some financial institutions like Vanguard, a joint account cannot have the TOD feature, while in others like Fidelity, it can have.

LAW07 Federal Estate Tax and Exemption

The Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE) for 2023 is $12.9 million per individual or $25.8 million for a married couple. This means that if an individual's estate is valued below the exemption amount, no federal estate tax is owed. If it exceeds the exemption, the estate tax rate applied to the excess value is 40%. The estate tax exemption is subject to change due to updates in tax laws.

LAW08 Estate Tax Return and IRS Form 706

Every individual with income must file a tax return with the IRS every year. The possible “last” one is Form 706 to be filed not by oneself but by their will executor within 9 months of his death. Form 706 is used to calculate the estate tax owed, taking into account various factors such as the value of the decedent's assets, exemptions, credits, and any prior taxable gifts.

LAW09 Portability of Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE)

Each individual has a Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE). If an individual doesn't utilize their full FETE upon passing away, the unused portion of that exemption can be transferred or "ported" to their surviving spouse. For example, if an individual passes away having used $5 million of their lifetime FETE (which is $12.9 million in 2023), their will executor can port the unused portion of $7.9 million to their surviving spouse, resulting in the spouse having a total of $20.8 million in FETE.

LAW10 Gift Tax and IRS Form 709

The federal gift tax applies to individuals who give gifts, but there is an annual exclusion that allows for tax-free gifts up to a certain limit. As of 2023, this exclusion is $17,000 per recipient per year, and it is adjusted annually for inflation. Individuals can make gifts up to the annual exclusion to as many people as they wish without triggering the gift tax. However, any excessive gifts beyond this exclusion must be reported yearly to the IRS on Form 709.

As an example, if you give three cash gifts in 2023, amounting to $15,000, $17,000, and $50,000, you will be required to file Form 709 by April 15, 2024, reporting an excessive gift of $33,000.
Certain gifts, such as those made to a spouse or qualifying charitable organizations, are generally excluded from the gift tax.
The gift tax is closely linked to the estate tax. Gifts made during a person's lifetime will reduce their estate tax exemption. If the lifetime exemption is fully utilized, any additional gifts may be subject to the gift/estate tax at a rate of 40%.
The gift tax is imposed on the giver, not the recipient. The recipient does not incur any gift tax liability.

LAW11 "Step-Up" in Cost Basis for Inherited Assets

In the context of inherited stock, a "step-up" refers to an adjustment in the cost basis of the stock to its fair market value at the time of the original owner's death. To illustrate, let's consider a hypothetical example: a man purchases a share of IBM stock for $100. Later, the man passes away, and the stock has appreciated by 20% to a value of $120. In this scenario, the cost basis for the man's beneficiary, whether it's his wife, children, or friends, becomes $120, rather than the original purchase price of $100. The primary advantage of a stepped-up basis is that it can lead to lower capital gains tax when the inherited stock is eventually sold. It's worth noting that this step-up can also be applied to real estate or other appreciable assets.

LAW12 Are Estate in Foreign Countries Subject to US Estate Law?

Generally, U.S. citizens and residents are subject to U.S. estate tax on their worldwide assets, including assets located in foreign countries.

Part 2 Nuggets for Estate Planning

NUGGET01 Where to Save Your Money?

Deposit your money in TOD accounts at financial institutions such as Bank of America or Fidelity. A TOD (Transfer on Death) is a type of account that allows the account holder to designate beneficiaries who will automatically inherit the funds in the account upon the account holder's death without probate.

NUGGET02 A Good Stock for Seniors

If you invest in stocks, it's wise to select broad market index funds. S&P 500 index funds like VOO or VFIAX have shown an average annual return of 12% over the past ten years(2013-2023).

NUGGET03 The Benefits of Holding Stocks in an Individual TOD Account Instead of a Joint Account

Holding a stock in an individual TOD account is often a better choice than holding it in a joint account for several reasons:

Avoiding Probate: One significant advantage is that assets held in an individual TOD account can surely bypass probate, ensuring a smoother and quicker transfer of ownership to the designated beneficiary. For some joint accounts such as the one at Vanguard may not be able to bypass probate.
Step-Up in Cost Basis: When stocks are inherited through an individual TOD account, the cost basis of the inherited stocks is adjusted to the current market value at the time of the original owner's passing. This step-up in basis can potentially lead to a lower capital gains tax liability for the beneficiary.

Let's illustrate the second point with a hypothetical example: Suppose a couple intends to invest $100 in IBM stock. It is advisable for them to create two individual TOD accounts, each investing $50, rather than a joint account with the entire $100. In a later year, if one of them (let's say, the husband) passes away, and the IBM stock has appreciated by 20%, the surviving spouse inherits the stock with a new basis of $60. When the surviving spouse decides to sell the stock, they will likely pay less in capital gains tax compared to the joint account scenario. However, it's important to note that this strategy could backfire if the IBM stock's value declines during the period when the husband is alive,

This same step-up in strategy can be applied to other appreciable assets, such as real estate, providing potential tax benefits for the beneficiaries.

For a joint account, it is generally subject to probate. As for step-up, a joint account may or may not receive it.

NUGGET04 Step-Up of Cost Basis for Joint Accounts

When one owner of a joint account passes away, does the inherited 50% share of the asset receives a step-up in cost basis? . If the inheriting owner is the spouse, the answer is maybe; otherwise the answer most likely is a no.

At Fidelity or Vanguard, a joint account can be split into two equal individual TOD accounts in days and washout cost.

NUGGET05 Will

With the guidance of lawyers, it's advisable to have a will in place to determine the distribution of your assets after your passing. Wills typically go through the probate process, which can be time-consuming and costly.

NUGGET06 Trust

A trust is a legal arrangement where you transfer your assets to a trustee who manages them on behalf of beneficiaries according to the terms you specify in the trust document. The advantages and disadvantages of trusts over wills include:

Wills are public records during the probate, so the details of your estate and beneficiaries become accessible to the public. while trusts can be kept private.
Trusts offer more control over the timing and conditions of asset distribution.
Assets held in a trust generally avoid probate, saving time, money, and preserving the privacy of your estate.
Setting up and managing a trust can be more complex and costly than creating a will, often requiring ongoing management by a trustee.

If the value of your estate is under FETE, and the asset is straightforward, say, consisting of your residence and financial accounts, creating a trust to avoid probate may not be beneficial, because of the trust's cost and maintenance.

NUGGET07 Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE)

The federal estate tax is imposed on an individual's estate if the total value of their assets exceeds a certain threshold, known as the Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE). The FETE amount may be adjusted annually due to inflation and legislative changes. In 2023, the FETE is set at $12.9 million per individual or $25.8 million for a married couple. If your assets exceed this exemption, the estate tax rate applied to the excess value is 40%.

NUGGET08 Federal Estate Tax Return Using IRS Form706

The total value of the decedent's assets, including real estate, cash, securities, business interests, and Intangibles.
Certain allowable deductions, such as funeral expenses, administrative expenses, and claims against the estate.
Outstanding debts and liabilities of the decedent..
Information about property and assets transferred or bequeathed to heirs, beneficiaries, or charitable organizations.
Information regarding any generation-skipping transfers subject to the GST tax.
Details about life insurance policies on the decedent's life.

NUGGET10 Capital Gain Tax on the Selling of Your Primary Residence

You can sell your primary residence and be exempt from capital gains taxes on the first $250,000 if you are single, and $500,000 if married filing jointly. This exemption is only allowable once every two years.

NUGGET11 Tax-Deductible Donation from IRA

A good way to make a tax-deductible donation is using the money from your IRA accounts. Advantages are 1. It can be a part of your annual required minimum withdraw RMW. 2. Even if you take standard tax reduction in your tax return, itemized duction is not normally allowed, but this donation from IRA is still allowable by IRS.

NUGGET12 Tax Consequences of Exchanging Assets with Your Spouse

Transfers of assets between spouses are generally not subject to income tax or gift tax. The tax basis of the assets generally carries over to the receiving spouse.

NUGGET13 Federal Inheritance Tax

There is no federal inheritance tax, meaning that a recipient does not pay any federal tax on the inheritance they receive, regardless of its size.

NUGGET14 State Estate Tax

As of 2023, the following states levy state estate tax: Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Hawaii and the District of Columbia. For example the estate tax rate in New York is 3.06% to 16%.

NUGGET15 Scheduled Change of Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE)

The Federal Estate Tax Exemption (FETE) currently stands at $12.9 million per individual or $25.8 million for a married couple. However, this figure is set to undergo a significant reduction by half in the year 2026. As a result, for high-asset individuals some of our estate planning strategies may require adjustments.

On a personal note, I hold the belief that this anticipated reduction in the FETE will not materialize, and there is a possibility of future tax laws being amended to maintain the present FETE or even raise it.

假如你有百畝地千户房，或是上市公司的大股東，那报税的花样就多了。我有朋友，他财产不动，前后两年IRS税金相差百万美元，那就是技巧了，区区会计师律师费算什么？彬兄，你说的完全正确。你是標準中國人，跟會計師學兩年，就偷偷学会了。可憐會計師以為你只會chop suey， count on you as a lifetime customer.

唯一例外的是，你的 Risk analysis 有点高深，比“婊㛡”更難应用。BTW,我查了字典，㛡字，倉吉还来来不及造。

老百姓

大部分人遗产低于$25.8M, 不必担心那可怕的40%遗产税。除了一两栋房子，其他的都是“paper instruments”, 股票存款等。那么，你的Estate planning变不出花样，翻来覆去的不过是利用 Step-up and TOD。但是，你一定要有這方面的基本常识，就是找律师也更有効，也省钱省时。

Probate 可怕吗？

As I celebrate my 83rd birthday today, I find myself reflecting on a defining moment in my life. This morning, before rising from bed, I found myself lost in a reverie. I imagined, "What if that acknowledgment had not been merely a piece of paper but a check?" I pondered how different the course of my life might have been had it been a tangible reward.

Surprisingly, the answer emerged clear and resolute—it wouldn't have altered much. This seemingly simple certificate has enriched my life in ways a material reward could never match. It stands as a symbol of a journey well-traveled, a testament to the fulfilling path I've walked.

The F-22, soaring through the skies as the world's first operational stealth aircraft, was a colossal endeavor involving the dedication and genius of thousands of engineers—and I count myself among them. The significance lies not just in the aircraft's sleek design but in the collective effort that birthed its creation.

As I reflect on this milestone, I'm reminded that true fulfillment doesn't always lie in material gains but in the satisfaction derived from contributing to something greater than oneself. It's a testament to the meaningful existence I've been fortunate to lead.

世界上这么多人，以你为中心，包围你的是一圈一圈的人。为了更明确分辨親疏关系，社会学家引進“人距”，这个参数就是人和人的数学距离。

人距随着时间地点在变化，小时候的玩伴，公司𥚃的同事，人距可以好到如兄弟，後來分開，人距就越变越大。

今天来了个美太太。

加汔油，挑白菜，

瑞士金條買几塊。

已经不是新闻了，最近Costco 在線上賣瑞士制造一兩重金塊，价格$2,000 左右，每人限两块，几小时内卖光。上一季总销量超过$100 million。

我个人没有买黄金的冲动。1。麻烦。2。储存，保险，sales tax 费用高。3。临时变现不容易，金求人可能被宰割。

更坏的的，过去五年，世界经济衰退，金价应该大涨。结果呢？金价五年一共涨了59%。相对的，S&P 500 index 五年一共漲了93%。

中国人爱黄金，相亲的时候，男士挂一条大金链，金牙闪闪发光，勝算高。Costco 卖金塊，那更是长胜军！抢都来不及，中国人，美国人，尤其是墨西哥人都搶。

老人投资重在分散风险，黄金股票都要有。当股市崩盘来到，救命稻草就是那几块黄金呀!
