North and Middle Caicos, and the Turks & Caicos Islands

North and Middle Caicos islands are the quiet, out-of-the-way, rural islands of the Turks & Caicos. Like all of the Turks and Caicos Islands, North and Middle are relatively flat limestone islands, with low trees and scrub. North Caicos gets more rain that the other islands of the TCI and so it is more lush. Visitors arrive by ferry (actually a water bus) at Belfield Landing, where the main paved road begins. This road passes through all of the settlements of North Caicos excepting Sandy Point (Kew, Whitby, Major Hill, and Bottle Creek) then continues over the causeway to the settlements of Middle Caicos (Conch Bar, Bambarra and Lorimers), for a total of 33 miles from end to end.

The Turks and Caicos islands (TCI) are two collections of small islands (the Caicos islands and the Turks Islands) southeast of the Bahamas and north of Hispaniola; about 600 miles ESE of Miami. They are flat limestone islands, geographically and geologically they are continuous with the Bahamas, but are politically a separate country, although also part of the British Commonwealth.

TCI are accessible via direct flights from a number of hub airports in the US and elsewhere. A direct flight from Charlotte, NC takes only 3 hours! Flights arrive in the international airport in Providenciales (locally known as "Provo"). Transportation around Provo or to the other islands is easy, in general by ferry to any of the the Caicos islands or by a short flight in a "pond hopper" to Grand Turk. There is also a cruise ship port on Grand Turk.

The US dollar is the standard currency, and most places on Provo take credit cards. Electricity is standard US (120V, 60Hz 3-prong). English is the lingua franca. The climate is tropical year-round, with temperatures usually in the 80's during the day and 70's at night. Water temps are consistently in the mid-80's.

There is something for everyone in the TCI, from full-service resorts and entertainment on Provo, to rustic historical colonial on Grand Turk, to secluded eco-tourism on North and Middle Caicos. Every island has its unique flavor.
