Mammatus Clouds

Mammatus clouds forming near Huntington Lighthouse

On 14JUN2011 during Division boat crew training, mammatus clouds began to form. The mammatus structure is created by swirling winds which may develop into tornadoes

Coast Guard safety policy is to stop what you are doing, and proceed at maximum safe speed to shelter. If you are in open water and can't get to shelter, proceed at maximum safe speed at a right angle to the direction of travel of the cloud to minimize the time you are exposed to the threat.

Our coxswains opted to call off training and proceed to shelter.
