Sorrow and Surprise, copyright Elizabeth N. Wellings 1996
Down on the beach
I saw a flock of birds take flight
Watched the colors fading
As the day turned into night
And in my dream that night
And in my dream that night
I saw my father's eyes
In them I saw sorrow
Sorrow and surprise
Then there arose
Such a storm on the sea
The colors of my father's eyes
Came drifting in to me
And in my dream that night
There was peace in his eyes
And in my dream that night
Just a touch of sorrow
Sorrow and surprise
And as I wandered up the hill
I saw the birds were flying still
I wished for wings, with them I'd fly
And vanish in the fading sky
And vanish in the night
And to my mind this living
Is only a dream
And underneath the surface is
An everflowing stream
And in our dreams at night
And in our dreams at night
We find a source of light
And in our dreams at night
We find an avenue of light
That leads us from the shadows
Of sorrow and surprise
