BEPSII brings together an international research community working on biogeochemical exchange processes at sea ice interfaces. The network supports collaboration across observations, experiments and modelling to improve understanding of the coupled sea ice–ocean–atmosphere system in both Arctic and Antarctic environments.  

The scientific activities of BEPSII encompass the development and dissemination of standard operating procedures for sea ice biogeochemical and biological investigations, the compilation and exploitation of existing observational datasets, and the production of peer-reviewed publications, including the coordination of journal special issues.
