POWELL'S MASTER SUITE

This remodel project remains one of my very favorite projects that I have ever been involved in. I am truly grateful to the Powells for the opportunity, for their friendship, and for being so great to work with. After raising four kids in this house with only one main-floor bathroom, they were ready to turn the second floor into a luxurious master suite. We added a full bath, dressing room, new windows, skylights, gas fireplace, flat-screen TV, surround-sound, custom cabinets, clear-finished trim work, new closets, heated tile floor and bench seat in the the bath, and the list goes on... They hired me to help make it happen, but they were certainly partners in the process, and we made many creative decisions together.

These "his and hers" built-in drawer chests are a great example of how we designed the project together. We went together to visit a local small-scale hardwood mill and kiln to select local, sustainable material. After drooling over many different hardwood slabs, including Oregon cherry, elm, maple, and others, we chose English walnut from retired orchard trees. The result is a truly unique finished product that we could feel great about.

This is hers.

This is his.

Clear, vertical grain Douglas fir trim work on the bathroom windows.

Custom vanity cabinet in Clear Vertical Grain Douglas Fir.

(Many thanks to Dan McAllister for use of his shop and expert hands.)

Classy hardware, chosen by the Powells.

This detail shows the traditional mortise and tenon door construction as well as the small but powerful "rare earth" magnet. The opposing magnet is embedded in the face-frame creating a secure yet silent closure, as the magnets never actually touch each other.

This cute little cabinet is not really a medicine cabinet. It hides electric toothbrushes and shavers, and has an electrical outlet for chargers. (A beveled-glass oval wall mirror was later added to the left, centered over the sink.)

New tile shower features tumbled river-rock floor,

shaving bench, glass deco bands, niche.

(Thanks to Barrett Reiner for the beautiful tile work.)

This is a truly sweet detail:

the heat-mat for the heated floor wraps up and onto the corner bench.

Two new east-facing skylights greet the morning light.

New, efficient south-facing window with clear fir trim. Wood interior cladding on double-hung windows preserves the original craftsman character of the home.

Entertainment from the comfort of bed.

Additional speakers are recessed in the ceiling for full stereo surround-sound.

The recessed gas fireplace is visible to the right.
