DAVENPORT PROJECT

This project in the SW Portland hills was memorable for a variety of reasons. For me, it was just a feel-good job. Much credit goes to the general contractor, Greg Tudor of Tudor Design and the design consultant Deneice Worthington for a well-planned project. In addition I had the true pleasure of working alongside an all-star team of skilled craftsmen including Dan McAllister, Dave McAllister, and Charlie Joslin.

Although this old home had been remodeled a time or two before we got there, it had never taken full advantage of the amazing views of Mt. Hood, the Willamette river, several bridges, part of downtown, and incredible sunrises, especially from the second floor. This new bay window was just what the doctor ordered.

This room became known as the "view room." Before this remodel, there was a single 30" door leading to this room, which is just to your right as you reach the landing at the top of the stairs. We widened the opening and I re-worked a couple of original doors from the house into a pair of french doors. I'm guessing that they are almost never closed, which means the view now is shared with the landing area as well as the entire second floor hallway.

Another opportunity to take advantage of the view. This private balcony off the master bedroom needed new French doors (not shown) and a new railing system.

The segmented arch from the original fireplace is imitated here in the family room fireplace, built-ins, and passageway.

Another arch added in the new "baking nook."

Laundry room details made from cabinets and trim salvaged from demolition in other areas of the house. This laundry sink was previously in the kitchen. The new kitchen design included a new, larger farm sink made of hammered copper. I custom built the sink base cabinet, again mostly from material salvaged from elsewhere in the house.

Another view of the sink base, with washing machine plumbing visible to the right.

(I wish the floor were more visible in these images. It's one of my favorite types of tile: small penny round mosaic tile. These are a basic cream color, but have a very slight green rim around each one. They feel amazing on bare feet.)

New master bath with marble tub/shower surround.

Another sweet job by Tony Vegas Tile.

New hall bath with custom double medicine cabinet by Dan McAllister, with help from me. Bead-board wainscoting with three-piece top rail and three-piece baseboards complete the trim.
