Scalextric Formula 1 cars with Johnson 111 or Mabuchi motors and standard Superslix rear tyres only. Axle tubing is allowed on front axle.
Scalextric: JPS Lotus; ELF Tyrrell; UOP Shadow; March Ford; Ferrari 312, and Elf Tyrrell 008.
The above list of cars is not meant to be exhaustive, but is an indication of what current catalogue cars are able to be raced in the various classes. The cars noted in bold for each class above are the most frequently used by club members. If in doubt see what everyone is racing and ask. If you don’t have cars for any of the Championship Classes please don’t just buy something – you can always borrow first.
Whilst the Historic 1970’s Scalextric Formula 1 cars are no longer available to purchase in model shops they can be easily be found on eBay etc for around £10 upwards or sometimes from some of the club's own members.
Class Rules
Body: The body and the driver cockpit may be modified as desired in order to recreate some of the many different incarnations / variations that the base car would have had. Rear aerofoils need to be present at the start of the evening so that the cars look like the real thing. If they get broken during the night’s racing then they can be left off if they can’t be repaired quickly and easily on the night.
Chassis: Chassis must be the original one rather than a 3D printed / aftermarket one. Weight (but not magnetic) may be fitted inside the car. The chassis edges may be trimmed / sanded slightly in order to allow some body rock (rather than chassis slide as per NSR cars etc) if it is clear that the original design is blocking that once the screws are loosened.
Screws: You may fit longer screws if you wish to allow body rock as the standard ones are usually too short to allow much loosening without them falling out.
Motor: The standard Mabuchi “18K” “S” motor must be used, although the colour of the plastic end may vary.
Braids and guides: There are a free choice of guide as well as braids.
Wheels and tyres: All cars must use original sized plastic wheels from cars of the era. Front tyres need to be small Superslix / ribbed and the rears need to be the large Superslix / ribbed ones. Tyres must be original / new Old Stock / Pendle PCS Repro RUBBER Tyres only. They may be glued and trued and treated with light oil. Front tyres may be coated (or simply just use some old hard ones) to make them zero grip if desired.
Gears, axles and bearings: There is a free choice for the bearings and axles but the rear gear must be a plastic Scalextric 27t gear. The motor pinion can be only be the Scalextric nylon 9 tooth or a metal 9 tooth. It is recommended that a front axle “tube” be fitted in order to improve the handling also.
Overall car dimensions: As this is a modified class the axles may only be widened up to a maximum width of 70mm on the front and 74mm on the rear. However, you may want to run with a narrower width to avoid tyres clashing with another car when racing as the track is actually quite narrow and therefore there isn’t much room between the cars and the open wheels / tyres.
