Bearwood Scalextric Club has been around for a long time now under various names and at various locations. John, Nigel, William and Graham are the oldest members who still attend regularly – which given that they started out in 1990 and before, is a feat that would be hard to beat today!
We have evolved from when we were at Shard End, building the track each race day from individual pieces on table tops of various heights into a club where we now have a fully landscaped track permanently set up, with access allowed at any time to our group.
Those with good memories will remember the days when we were at the Harry Mitchell Centre in Smethwick. We were originally located upstairs in the main leisure centre building with a track made of fabricated sections that we assembled on the day. We were then able to take over one of the old huts that was formally occupied by Warley Model Railway Club.
It was there where we enjoyed the largest weekly attendance in the club’s history with large (think 15-20+) regular weekly attendances and major presences in the national racing championships of the time - like the 1/32 Auto Trader Sponsored Touring Car Championship.
Some of today’s 'best known names' in the slot car world either started their racing career at our club or were racing at our club during this period – names like Paul Darby, Richard Welsh, Mac Pinches, Graham Woodward and Graham & Chris Thomas to name but a few. They all made their mark on the Club’s history. Even some of today’s current star names like James Noake (Slot Rally) have learnt their trade at our club.
Not bad for a small club?
Given the will to want to, you too can rise like a 'Phoenix' from the flames and take slot car racing as far as you want to from humble beginnings – just like our friends above did. Or you can just enjoy a weekly fun night out amongst like-minded people - which is how the club tends to be thought of today. More like an 'extension of racing at home with your mates' rather than a 'go all out to win and go home with a headache' racing club where winning on the night is all that matters.
Our club name may have had to change over the years but at the end of the day the people behind it and the ethos that racing is to be enjoyable is still the same.
Why not let our experience enable you to enjoy your hobby even more.
We’re sure you won’t be disappointed.
