Racer (John Horsman) at their TechEd?
This is your very rare opportunity to meet and hear John Horsman, a person who was deeply involved in the golden age of endurance and sports car racing. John will be reunited with the Gulf-Porsche 917 that the JWA-Gulf team raced in 1970 and 1971. If you attended our GT 1 “Show and Tell” in May, you understand what I am saying and you know how special this Tech Session will be.

After military service in the RAF and studying engineering at Cambridge, John Horsman had a long and successful career in motorsport. He started as an apprentice to the legendary John Wyer at Aston Martin in 1959. He followed John Wyer to Ford’s Advanced Vehicles program in 1964 and worked on the development of the GT40, including supervising the production of the GT40 street cars. In 1967 he became the chief engineer for the JW Automotive racing team under Wyer. This famous sports car team ran both the iconic Gulf GT-40 and Porsche 917 racing programs. With Gulf sponsorship, the team developed their own line of Mirage sports racing cars and also campaigned the GT40, winning at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. In 1970 and ’71, the JWA-Gulf team ran Porsche’s factory race team with the 917. John’s re-work of the tail on the 917K was instrumental in making the 917 one of the greatest race cars in history. When JWAE evolved into Gulf Research Racing, John become the team principal, team manager and chief engineer. He wore all three hats for the Mirage program from 1972 through 1975 (winning Le Mans again in ’75). In the late Seventies, John worked with Harley Cluxton’s GTC team as they continued running the Mirage-based cars at Le Mans.
