Our house is an excellent location for wade fishing (Bring your own waders). The house has its own private beach 111 feet (34 meters) wide where you can wade right out into the shallow bay. The grassy, silty bottom keeps the the fish around for the winter and provides a great feeding ground for the fish in the warmer months. Baffin Bay is renowned for saltwater trout and red drum fishing.
The house does not have its own private pier. However, Pier fishing is available at two large county owned piers in the area, one at Kaufer-Hubert Park which is just 2.6 miles away (3.2 km), and the other at Riviera Beach 5.0 miles away (8 km). These piers are open all night with powerful night lights to attract the fish.
On quiet mornings or evenings when the wind is calm the bay is excellent for a trip along the shore with your kayak, canoe or rubber raft. (You have to bring your own gear!)
If you bring a boat, there is a public boat ramp for launch into Baffin Bay at Kaufer-Hubert Park 2.6 miles away (3.2 km). Just off the beach in the bay to the east are the well known “Neubauer Rocks”, a favorite spot for fishermen in the area. The nearest bait store in the area is the convenience store at Loyola Beach 3.5 miles away. You can park your boat and trailer in the driveway when you're not using it, or you can anchor a few yards offshore and wade in and out. (The bay is only 3-4 feet deep at about 20 yards out)
The birdwatching is EXCELLENT in this area. Baffin Bay is located along one of the primary bird migration routes in north America. (Above photo taken in our yard - Hooded Oriole)
(Above photo taken in our yard - Painted Bunting). Nearby Kaufer-Hubert Park (2.6 miles away) has a public bird watching tower. King Ranch, the largest ranch in Texas, is on the opposite side of the bay and is a well known bird haven.
In our yard we have beautiful twisted mesquite trees and some brush on the property that attract wild birds. We, and most of our guests put out bird-seed in our bird feeder each day. After a couple of days... the local birds begin to gather at the feeder. With a little patience and attentiveness MANY very interesting birds can be seen. A hummingbird feeder is also a must - there are almost always hungry hummingbirds in the area.
Greenjays, orioles (altimira and hooded), meadow larks (above photo), buntings, hummingbirds, cardinals, mockingbirds, flickers, doves, etc. are common as well as an array of water fowl along the beach. At night pelicans sometimes glide through the lights from the fishing piers.
Evenings can be really nice out on the patio. Wildlife roams on or near the property often especially in the evening and early morning hours. With a little luck and alertness you may see bobcats, javelina, deer, rabbits, skunks, armadillos, lizards, etc. in brush close to the property or just across the road from the home in the undeveloped ranch area of several hundred acres. We sometimes set out yard lights which create a "view" at night and make it easier to spot wildlife.
We have a small wooden deck overlooking the beach with a couple of adirondack chairs... a nice place for morning coffee or for watching the sundown. The King Ranch shoreline is visible across the bay from the home.
A lot of places in the area get their name from the famous King Ranch which is the largest ranch in Texas (825,000 acres!). The King Ranch House (open to the public - a great excursion), is just outside the city of Kingsville which is about 23 miles away. Kings Inn, a large family-style restaurant famous for its seafood, is about 3,5 miles away. Another restaurant, Baffin Bay Seafood, has great seafood and other local specialties (fried cactus, frog legs, etc.). It is about 5 miles (8 km) away in Riviera Beach.
